Sorry to sound contrary but I think the size and weight do matter - if its too big it will be more likely to bash about and worse yet get caught on something. I would think four inches would be about it for length.
Oops - I forgot to add - these are very nice designs indeed!

The longest pin I have is 3" - 3-1/2" long and solid cast pewter. Don't quote me but I think it is about .9 oz. in weight. It is awesome and I love it but I'd be hard pressed to put it on my PV kilts for concern it would pull the fabric out of shape, so it stays on my wool heavyweight kilt.
As a scale reference, the sgain dubh in our hose is between 6" and 8" long over all and our sporrans are typically about 8" x 8". I'd opt for a smaller more dense kilt pin than a larger lighter kilt pin. Just my preference.
If I may suggest an idea for a kilt pin, how about initials with thistles intertwind so I could have an 'F' in a nice elegant script with a couple of thistles wrapped around it. I guess an 'M' would be the next best letter to do also
Very nice art work by the way. I wish I could draw that well. And even if I could manage a drawing that good, I'd never be able to do it twice (once on paper and then carve it into a mold ) .

I have some that are 4" in length including one from mid 19th century made of silver in the form of a "safety pin" (underlying the predicate "traditional"). The standard variation still in use by the regiments is a tad over 4" in total length. This is, I think, a good maximal size. I don't think I'd use one any much larger.

Yeah, I'd be very concerned with what a 6" silver pin would do to the fabric of my kilts. I don't think I'd put anything bigger than about 4" on my apron.
Those are beautiful designs, though.

I only have six kilt pins, so I need to buy some more!
But none is shorter than three inches and the longest is 4 1/4". All are fairly heavy, for their size.
On active duty in Okinawa several years ago (Oh how time flys!) I used to use a dress Marine Corps collar emblem, that had tie tac type post pins. That worked, and added a nice touch.
Once I had a really, really cheap kilt that I had purchased direct from Pakistan from an add in The Highlander (Is that newspaper still in existence?) anyway, the kilt looked pretty good, but it started literally falling apart. I remember that the kilt pin made a big hole in the top punture, where the weight is. The kilt was purported to be real wool, but the weave was loose. I bought it in 1972 or 73 for $60.00. I don’t know where it is now. But I should find it and at least make some flashes out of the material, or maybe a fly plaid.

As a newbie with no kilt pins yet. I'd be very interested in these designs at about 4 inched in length. Much beyond that would, I think. be too long. The designs are beautiful. I look forward to these and other designs, perhaps working a cladaugh in somehow (My wife and I wear them as wedding bands, so it somehow seems appropriate to me.)

We will see to it
Well Marshal Moroni, Thanks for the compliment, I'll have to see about sizing them down in the wax. I believe it will require some serious magnification eye wear

I'm thinking that 4" is probably about the max. Sword pins six inches long almost qualify as small knives by themselves. The sgian dubh's overall length is usually 7".
Nice looking work though.
