It's still not worth sitting through the Avengers movie to see Sir Sean kilted. What a horrible flick.

It's amazing that you can have a film Ralph Finnes, Uma Thurman, Sean Connery, and Eddie Izzard that is almost unwatchable.

There was one small scene where Thurman was introducing herself to Connery and they were discussing clouds. The conversation became faster and more animated between the two with a bit of a sexual subtext.

That small bit was dead on target as a tribute to the original show.

To bad the rest of the movie missed so badly.

For the record, as beautiflu as Ms. Thurman is, she is no Diana Rigg!

    Cheers

Nor was Diana Rigg any Honor Blackman. As I've stated before, I loved the old TV series, and still do. About once a year, I invite friends over and watch a season of the old series, to reaquaint them with why spying was once cool. (We've also been known to watch Secret Agent Man and The Man From U.N.C.L.E., as well as Get Smart and The Prisoner). But a lot of those shows were heavily grounded in the cultural miluex of the times. Today, espionoge is not as sexy as it once was, nor even acknowledged in the same way. Even James Bond has his feet planted firmly in the '60s, not the modern era.

So, could Avengers (the movie) have been better? Yes, undoubtedly. But it could have done so only at the expense of being a deliberate pastiche of the era in which the originals were made... something it tried for, but failed at.

It might be interesting to see a truly modern Avengers... something set in the post-cold-war period, and with modern sensiblity. But the funding channels of Hollywood almost guarantee this will never happen. Alas.
