Best kilt in the heat.
I live in Central Florida and have found that the most comfortable kilt I have is the home sewed kilt I received from MOWGLI. I compare this to a SWK Thrifty Kilt and another econo-kilt from Frugal Corner. The difference is the MOWGLI kilt is less restricting, less prone to personal exposure, and best of all, is the coolest to wear in 90+ temp / 50+ humidity. I wear the MOWGLI kilt all the time and have received several compliments on it.

The most comfortable kilt I own is the one I just got from Matt Newsome. A 4 yard box pleat, obviously.
I don't wear it working in the blacksmith shop, however, and for that I have several 4 yard box pleated kilts that I have made from cotton and wool fabrics. Mostly comfort is about fit though, in my opinion. Though there are other considerations, depending on the expected activities, temperature, etc., as others have mentioned.

My most comfortable kilts for day to day wear are the ones I have gotten from USAK both causual and Semi-Trad

Based on where you're at, I would go with a 5- or 8-yard PV or a hemp RKilt.
Both will be comfortable in the range of temperatures you're likely to experience. The PV will give you the look of tartan, without the itch or cleaning problems. The hemp RKilt stands up to just about anything, is very comfortable when broken in, and breathes better and dries faster than cotton.

For pure comfort, for me, you just can't beat a Sportkilt. When I'm going out I prefer to spiff up a little with a wool kilt, generally either the USAK leatherneck 13 ounce or the Newsome box pleat tweed. Most of my kilts are pretty comfortable, anyway. The USAK casual is almost as comfortable as the Sportkilts, and a much nicer KILT in my view.
But for pure comfort? My vote goes to Sportkilt.

My two most comfortable are a box pleat I made myself and a 5yd wool from Rocky at USA Kilts.

As most here know already . . .
I am a fan of the box pleat for comfort. It is GREAT in this heatwave. I am MORE comfortable in my 16 oz worsted box pleat kilts than in my COTTON SHORTS!
I have even been wearing my Lewis hose from the tartan museum (with flashes) too.
I wore my Wallace one today, Caledonia 13 oz yesterday, and plan to wear the MacNeil tomorrow.
It has been 100-106 around here with high humidity (YET, NO RAIN). SO, I feel the box pleat is GREAT.
When it is near freezing, I'll just add a jacket to what I wore at 105. I'll be FINE.
Can I say, "versatile." It is also comfortable to drive in (which my 1 5-yard wool knife pleat is not).
As of know, I have 7 box pleats (1-saxony wool, 2-13 oz worsted, 4 -16oz worsted) and plan to make SEVERAL more (material for 3 more in my house and 4 more on my "short-term" wish list).
I am a "wee bit" fan of the box.

What you are describing is a USAK Casual kilt.

What I didn't way before (which was more focused on temps):
The box pleat kilts are more balanced from to back than the other styles (which tend to vary more on material, material weight, and where they hang.
In a box pleat, half the material is in the front and half is in the back. The box pleating works somewhat like a mild anchor, as the under cut of one pleat pulls AGAINST the one next to it (the "swish" of a knife pleat is the same action that allows fairly easy wind expansion, as it expands like an accordian).
I could go on and on, but there are MANY threads on the advantages of box pleats vs. advantages of knife pleats.
I just like how box pleats "feel" when worn.
