I'm going to get a vest too, I think. Now, is it acceptable to wear a colored shirt with tie or should I just stick with white?
Glad I could help.
I wore white because it was for a Reformation service at church, and I wanted it to be dressy. However, we had pipers there with dark blue shirts, and it looked quite nice.
Also, I think I am going to add a vest to my wardrobe, both for use with and without the jacket.

It all depends if you are part of the wedding party of just attending. If you are just attending I would try not to be over dressed. Usually only the wedding party wears tuxedos.

Would the "waist jacket" be akin to a Military Mess Jacket?

Not quite a military mess jacket...here's a really bad photo that I took right after I got the jacket home:

I guarantee that it looked better after a cleaning and pressing and with a wing collar shirt and bowtie.
One of the things that I've noticed about the mess jackets is that they often have braid attached that the user feels may be inappropriate and it's difficult to remove without the jacket looking bad as a result.

That looks very close to my tuxedo, that I just do not wear, I wore it once for my younger brother's wedding, he sells menswear and insisted that we all buy our tuxedos from him.

It's basically a tails coat without the tails.

How about a rental jacket for Saturday and save for an Argyll to wear later? Also check out J Higgins. Their jackets are reasonable and he probably has stock.

I found this Vintage Bronze Black Fleck Waist Jacket in size 46 on e-bay...It's not really a formal, but could be considered a decent collectors item:
