They look good, and thanks for the idea - I don't know that would have occurred to me. I'll have to take a look at what's left over after I finish the kilt I'm working on.

When all you have are scraps left from the making of the kilt, there's no way to do it on the bias, unfortunately. Still, they hold well.

with the wrap style flashes does there need to be any stretch? I understood these hold the hose in place because of the friction of the flashes wrapped upon. This creates a ring that will not expand. Tied above calf where the leg gets smaller this creates a small ring of flashes that can't expand over the larger calf.

Conceivably you could use a piece of steel cable as flashes. You would need the right friction and flexibility.

If for style/looks you wanted a set of these flashes on the bias. if you have enough material to cut four "squares" of tartan. Fold these in to a "tube" and sew together. These pieces should be long enough to hang down below the folded hose tops and go at least half-way up under the folded hose top. The connecting strap can be just about any material as long as it is ruff enough to create friction.

I ave made these before too. I find the edge looks nicer if you fold in half, sew the seam (make a tube) flip the tube right side out, press tube so the seam is centered (that's the back), sew a stitch 3/4" from each end and fray. Thats what I did and it worked for me, take it for what it's worth. ($0.02)

Unfortunately I didn't have enough material to make the tube - just about a 1.5 inch wide piece, hence the need to sew around use as is. I agree that the tube version would work better.

That's the nice thing about making your own - you can adjust them as you like.

You can sew down the long side and then use something like a wire coat hanger to turn it inside out, and then hand finish the ends.
