Always pays to do your own research.
Oh, wow. That one is rough.
I get the feeling that she just saw the similar colours and was sure they were the same tartan.
That said, maybe her brother went to 'that' shopkeeper, too.
You know... I never get any hassle about my kilts in America unless I am in an airport.

I too am sorry that you encountered that kind of attitude, Arlen. What kind of hassle have you encountered in airports?
When I fly, I usually so need to compartmentalize all the various items required for the trip that I can't imagine flying kilted.

They always seem to mean so well until they find out they're wrong....they are never wrong....that's their husband's job...
So far, I've been lucky...misidentified guessers have accepted the truth gracefully...but as mentioned I always tack on that "they are very similar" even if I have no clue what the guessed tartan looks like.
And...Arlen...you may have noticed that dementia is rampant in the U.S....something about too many Twinkies and not enough Haggis...

I never noticed. I guess I was too busy looking at all of the beautiful American ladies to notice the rest.

Arlen, sorry that had to happen to you, some people. I suppose it would be easy to mis-identify a tartan if you had only seen it a few times and had not seen it in a while, had that been the end of it then fine no problem, however the rest of encounter is inexcusable. It does sound like you handled it with the most grace possible.

That is one of the funniest stories I've heard in a long time. She's probably still stewing over it.

Well, if you had been accosted by a fake Scotsman who stole your family tartan wouldn't you be?

I think Arlen is using this whole tartan confusion as a way to hide the fact that he needs to work on his fake Scottish accent.
