    Childrens Names

Congratulations! I've always been partial to my son's name, Ian Michael.

Push hard for Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. (Isaiah 8:1-3)

Eventually "settle" for the name you really like ...

    I chose Disney names.

My daughters are Ariel and Jasmine, and my son is prince Eric. Although Ariel is a Bible name for a boy we try to ignore that.

What McMurdo said. Handed down old family names, no matter what they are, confer a solidity that leave passing enthusiasms and fads behind.

BTW I had an ancestor named Meshack. His twin brother was Shadrack. But that was in the 18th century when Biblical names were more popular.

Hmm. Don't know if I'd want a boy named Bambi or Tramp.

Liam was our choice for a boy, Shannon for a girl. Michael is always a good one. I'm sure Prester can correct me if wrong but I think Michael is the only named angel and also means "god like". Congratulations on the pending arrival!!

There are LOTS of named angels! (Michael, Gabriel, Raphael...and more)

I think your choice of Alasdair Matthew is a great one, Nervous Jock!

    Please, allow me

    <lecture>

Actually, the Bible mentions three of the Archangels: Michael (Jude 1:9; Revelation 12:7), Gabriel (Daniel 8:16; 9:21; Luke 1:19, 26), and Raphael(Tobit*).

In the book of Tobit, Raphael says that he is “one of the seven holy angels who present the prayers of the saints and enter into the presence of the glory of the Holy One" (Tobit 12:15). While none of the other angels are mentioned in the Bible, Tradition states that their names are:

    • Michael — “Who is like unto God?”: Commander of the Lord's army
    • Gabriel — “The power of God”: The messenger of God
    • Raphael — “God’s healing”: Patron of travellers, exorcists, and healers
    • Uriel — “The light or fire of God”: The bearer of God's truth; patron of scientists and philosophers
    • Selaphiel — “The communicant of God”: Called upon for aid in prayer
    • Jegudiel — “The glory or laudation of God”: Patron of those who labour under great responsibility
    • Barachiel — “God's blessings”: Disperses the blessings of God; the leader of the guardian angels

There is a nice article on the seven archangels here.

Note: In the interests of full disclosure, I should mention that I am partial to the name “Michael," and that Saint Michael the Archangel is my patron saint.

*Tobit is one of the books included in the Septuagint, and is part of the scriptures of the Orthodox and the Catholic churches, but not in most Protestant churches.
