You can use a baking bag for the Haggis. Thescot says it worked pretty well for last years Atlanta Burns Nite dinner.

    Vegan Haggis

    1/3 cup oatmeal
    2 1/2 tbsp. vegetable oil
    3 cloves garlic, minced {leeks or shallots? use your imagination!}
    1 small onion
1/2 tsp. each: sea salt, freshly ground pepper
    1 tsp garam masala
1/4 cup canned lentils [drained & rinsed]
    3/4 cup chopped, peeled carrots
    3/4 cup chopped, peeled rutabaga
    1/3 cup mushrooms
1/3 cup canned red kidney beans [drained & rinsed]
1/4 cup Earth Balance margarine [or similar non-butter]
    2 tbsp chopped peanuts
    3 tbsp chopped walnuts
    3 tbsp chopped almonds
    1 tbsp water

In a small saucepan, cook oats as per package instructions. Set aside.
In a large skillet, heat oil medium-high. Add garlic, onion, salt, pepper, garam masala. Cook, stirring until onion softens [2-3 min.] Add lentils, carrots, and rutabaga. Cook, stirring, about 2 minutes. Add mushrooms, and stir in kidney beans and margarine. Add nuts and cook until slightly softened, but still retaining their "crunch."
Remove from heat, stir in oatmeal. Add water to 9 X 5" loaf pan. Add haggis mixture and cook in 350 degree F pre-heated oven until top is crispy: about 35-40 minutes.
Turn haggis out into a serving bowl, and use a fork to break it up and fluff.
    Makes 4-6 servings.

Notes: Nuts, carrots and rutabaga can be chopped to create whatever texture you want. Most ingredients can vary according to taste, such as more oatmeal, or mushrooms. Cashews are excellent. Wild rice would go well, too.
Sounds great. Guess I always though that Haggis was more a mix of entrails, kidney, carrots, and such. I'm going to have to try this recipe.

For what it's worth, about ten years ago the best haggis award was presented to a vegan cafe in Edinburgh and, thus, to a Vegan Haggis.

I have a close friend (and distant relative) who has two young children for whom peanuts can be deadly.

    Many thanks.

    Alternate ingredients for Vegan Haggis

IMPORTANT! If you're planning on whipping up a vegan haggis to serve to anyone with allergies, please be sure to find out exactly what the those who might eat it are allergic to. In most cases, the best thing to do is ask what they use in place of--for instance--peanuts.

I would suggest that you could omit nuts altogether and add some barley flakes to the oatmeal mixture. The barley won't cook completely with the oats [it's pretty tough stuff], but it will probably give a bit more texture when cooked with the rest of the ingredients. You can also chop the carrots and rutabagas a bit more coarsely to add texture. Rice might be an option as well.

Oh yes....I agree with Pour1Malt...ye canna hae haggis withoot th' single malt......but in such an enlightened environment as X marks, I just assumed that a wee drachm is always in order!

A very good point! my mom is allergic to both peanuts and walnuts. this recipe as is would kill her!

Of course, I would, knowing this, make a substitution... I may still bear a grudge against her for years of alcoholism, emotional abuse, and neglect, but come on....

You can always substitute soy nuts for peanuts. I believe you can find soy-based varieties of most nuts.
