I do not as yet own any Balmoral hose, my Argyll hose are being knit right now and should be to me for Burns Night, however I really must disagree with your assessment. Balmoral hose to me anyway are a way of elevating a dressy outfit, and as Matt has stated they ensure the outfit is unique and a step above the norm. They seem to be a modern take on Argyll hose, perhaps I am mistaken with that assumption but that is what strikes me with them. I think they are quite handsome and will order a pair or two at some time.

Guffaw! gilmore, where did you spend the 1960's ???
For anyone who may be wondering, in this part of the world "the shag" is a dance; in fact, it's the official dance of the state of South Carolina.

Atlanta, until 1968, when I went to San Francisco. In high school we would go to Daytona.

One guideline I have heard is to match the hose with the dominant color worn on the torso, either the shirt or the jacket. I would also try to match that with a minor color in the tartan, to tie everything together.
Of course, you will be the one wearing the outfit, so it has to be pleasing to you (and any significant other ).
