It sounds like it might be preferred if we just do our own thing. So what do folks say we gather again at St. Andrew's for dinner and spirits? In this case, would it be of any interest and feasable to do our own haggis thingie?
Is there any preference between Friday the 18th and Saturday the 19th?

I can actually do the 19th. My only performance that day is for lunch for a DBE group. I will be in Chicago on the Friday.

If we don't do the week before Burns Night I can certainly do one anytime after the 28th. I am booked to do one at the Disney resort on the 27th and I won't fly back 'till the 28th.

If we schedule for the evening of the 19th, would you be able to do us the honors?

The 19th of January is probably good for me and the mrs. Count us in, especially if Chef is going to be the master of ceremonies!

A REAL Burns night......

One suggestion I would have for a pleasant, affordable event would be the Burns Night held by the local chapter of Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. It includes an address to the haggis, and munchies-no dinner, with lots of dancing, and they are VERY accommodating to newbies! The admission for this past year's event was ten dollars.

What other thoughts/options?

I'll run with the herd, but on reflection, my inclination would be to go where the best food and drink can be had.:food-smiley-002:

My 2 pound Sterling
Is not The burns suppers are normally held on or near the poet's birthday, January 25 ?
January 25, 2008 falls on a FRIDAY. In honor of the fact NYC/NJ Members of "X Marks the Scot" and "MEN in Kilts NY" rallied together on St. Andrews Night Friday 11/30/07, would not the idea of meeting to celebrate a real Burns Night on the actual day hold great meaning.
I for one would finally like to attend a REAL Burns night. (sitting around over tofu Haggis was a real let down, especially since there was NO Beer, NO Ale, NO Whisky, NO Way."
As for the country dancers line dance, how late into the evening will they be dancing? Maybe we can "crawl" our way over, after our bellies are full and our cheeks are rosie with "spirits", that would make for an interesting photo op.
UPDATE:: I checked the calendar for the Scottish country Dance event.
Their web site list their Burns night on a Thursday night. Jan 24, 2008 That may put the limit on how much rebel rousing some of us can do since many of us have Very early morning start to get to work that Friday!
< Not just some Hors d'œuvres with not a drop of fine Beer/ Ale or Whisky in sight. Is'nt breaking some kind of "Brave Heart" Kilt law, not having access to Beer/Ale or Whisky while in a Kilt?? int:
In the order of expense for Burns night Suppers;
1) The New York St. Andrews Society $$$$$
2) The NY Caledonian Society $$$$
3) ST. Andrews pub NYC $$$ < We Know the will have Beer/Ale and a wide selection of Whisky. St. Andrews menu of "traditional" Haggis, Cock-a-leekie as well as a Contemporary menu (Mc Haggis/ McHappy meals). :food-smiley-002:
Now the issue regarding the Sporran Police.
Granted if you attend one of the "Society" Burn nights , yes you might be hauled in by the Sporran police if you were not formally dressed. However to the Lads who expressed concern over not having formal kilt attire.
Breathe easy lads, if we do St. Andrews NYC, NO Sporran Police ("Kilt as you are" and we will all have a GOOD time.
By the way Lads, as a growing regular/irregular group if we frequent St. Andrews as a group, who knows what "goodies might come our way".
Hey St. Andrews could sponsor our very own "X Marks the Scot/ Men In Kilts NY Curling team!
As the the last four members of our party Last Sat Dec 8, were remembered for kilting it up on St. Andrews day. And we were Welcomed to come back maybe getting our own table could be a possibility.
If our NY/NJ based group continues to grow, I am sure we can do a better job of planning future Burns night functions, officially joining another group or if our number increase, maybe even plan our own event. Then there is always a trip to Scotland.

I think we will need an actual POLL
FIRST lets tally any numbers for those who might want to attend an actual BURNS Night Supper on burns night, (with Beer/Ale, Whisky and an actual Supper).
SECOND; who is to say we could not do MORE than ONE Burns night function? At last count i think Chef is up to at least 4 or 5 ? Country line dance, one night, Pub crawl on another. I guess Cirthalion and myself will have to smuggle in a flask under our kilts!
Like the announcer in the Apple iPhone commercials; " You have carried other cel phones , that "sorta, kinda give you the almost internet. Or you can carry and iPhone and get the REAL Internet in your pocket."

Ok, we have on the table a proposition to celebrate Burns' birthday on the actual day, Friday the 25th or, as I had proposed, on the prior Saturday, the 19th.
Thus far, if we do the 19th, we can hold our own X Marks serving of the haggis with that celebrated presenter, Chef. For this day, we have able to attend thus far:
Chef
Cirthalion and consort
Myself
On the 25th, we have the option of joining the throngs of crazy Scotsmen at the formal celebrations. I'm not opposed to this option, and do like the fact that it'll be the actual day. I'm just not crazy at some of the crowds some of these events draw.
Since there would be the need to get a haggis, if we do our own ceremony, I think it's best to pin this down soon. I hear that they are very elusive come the holidays. (Something about the winter solstice clues them in to their approaching demise?)
So, Ladies and Gentlemen, what say ye? Anybody else care to join a group on the 19th or do you prefer to wait for the 25th?

There's a great title: Chef, Procurer of Haggis.
Anyone seen Mike Myers' So I Married an Axe Murderer? Remember his nightmarishly-alliterative address to his would-be wife?: "Harriet! Harriet! Hard-hearted Harbinger of Haggis!"
That's even better. Chef, you're the "Harbinger of Haggis"...

P.S. Guys, I was bummed that I was going to miss your kilt night on the Dec. 22nd because of holiday travels; but I've been invited to go to two events kilted: midnight mass on Christmas eve, in formal (Argyll), and then a black-tie new year's eve party, for which I'll crack out the whole Prince Charlie get-up. Should be grand! I'll get lots of pics.
Merry Christmas to the whole NY/NJ krew!
