I know Ferintosh mentions the ability, but I don't know how wide spread that is. I really don't recall ever seeing laundry mats while there before.
An excellent question. Remember, I was there for 3 weeks. Only a handful of B&Bs accommodated my need for a clothes washer and dryer, but I knew this in advance based on advice. So, I took only drip-dry tech shirts (by Ex-Officio, Columbia, or Orvis) and some woolite packets and washed such in the bathtub more times than not. Also, wash-clothes were not in widespread use in Scotland, either (I don't know about now), so I took a micro-fiber wash-cloth (the Container Store) that repelled bacteria. If you're taking electric appliances, like a hair-dryer, don't forget to take an adapter. Also, purchase a phone card or have your cell phone upgraded for international use. At the time I was there, it was difficult to find convenient public telephones.

In Wester Ross in the NW Highlands is a small village called Dundonnell. It's on A832 on the edge of Little Loch Broom. There're Munroe's nearby, a national forest - saw a capercaillie there, and best of all is the hotel-restaurant-pub.... The Dundonnell Hotel.
And it is wonderfully isolated and quiet. Wee wifie & I have stayed there a number of times.
We prefer September for travel to Scotland. Most of the obnoxious tourists have gone, attractions are still operating, midgie season is kaput, and it's still their summertime.
If you're gonna hire a rental car, study this Highway Code website: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAn...code/index.htm .
You'll be mighty glad you did - particularly when you reach your very 1st roundabout when you're jetlagged and edgy.

BT100, I would suggest that you get some good travel guides, Foder's makes a good one, and "Scotland for Dummys" is really great. It lays out everything, including example trips, which can help you with figuring out time and distance while exploring sites in a "real world" situation, something a map can't do.

We honeymooned in Scotland in 2001, spending the first week in Edinburgh and the second hiking across Skye. Is the Fringe Festival too touristy to mention?? It was my favourite part. We stayed at a B&B right on the Royal Mile, about 1/2 mile from the castle. Amazing.

I don't know the answer to your "laundry" question.I would hazard a guess though, that most B&B's would be fairly obliging.Don't make the mistake,in the highlands particularly,of looking at your map and seeing a town written IN LARGE LETTERS and thinking it is a town of considerable size, therefore it should have all the facilities. It may have a bus stop and 20 houses and that will be it!OH, and NO FUEL!

plan your trip to the smallest detail. Book all of the B&B's in advance, leave nothing to chance. You can ask the B&B about laundry, and what may be in "town". I made a itinary with maps, phone numbers, ferry schedules, planned sites to visit, and brought our travel books as ref matteral.

We learned to bring travel clothing that can be washed in hotel sinks. Wee wifie uses a surgical tubing-like clothesline created for drying clothing in a hotel room.
Website like www.travelsmith.com have lotsa travel clothing & related gear.

The map shows what I did in one day from Ullapool to Inverness in July 2006 (though I didn't go across to Orkney).
Hoping for some decent weather this year so I can see some of the other bits I missed!

My wife and I found the trains very convenient in Scotland - frequent and on-time.

(Pitlochry station)
Besides a must-do visit to Dumfries, don't miss Pitlochry. It's a beautiful little town in a picturesque valley in the Highlands.

(Moulin - a wee village just outside Pitlochry)
Take a stroll through the woods, to the Black Spout and Edradour - Scotland's smallest distillery.

(Trail to Edradour)

(Near the Black Spout)

(The Black Spout)

(Scotland's smallest distillery - Edradour)

(The still)
If you feel like hiking further, take the road back into town to see even more beautiful scenery.

Eat lunch at the Moulin Inn, definitely.

(Walking back from Edradour; the road down to Moulin/Pitlochry)

(Moulin)
An hour or so of strolling up through the woods, past the Black Spout, to Edradour. An hour for the amusing distillery tour, and a sample or two (free of charge!). About 40 minutes back into town, with about that for a lunch at the wonderfully old Moulin Inn. All in all, a fine afternoon....
