Stewart Christie operates from a small shop that is devoid of tartan tat, but full of fine tweeds, an excellent selection of corduroy trousers, shooting sticks, and the sorts of things that a Scottish gentleman should have, even if he doesn't need them. They hand tailor the uniforms for the Company of Archers and, in my opinion, are the best kilt makers around. With GBP 1,500 to spend you should be able to obtain not only a superb kilt, but also a first class day wear jacket and waistcoat, and an excellent pair of hose to match up with your kilt.

from South Wales UK!
Heck £1500 would get you several kilts of top notch quality!
Besides those already mentioned I can recommend Hector Russell, Celtic Craft Centre and St Kilda all in Edinburgh.
In Inverness there is also Highland House of Fraser, I haven't used them but they have a well stocked shop - might be worth a look.

Welcome to the Rabble!
First off from Sunny Southern California.
I have a kilt from Bill Barclay who is located in your area. He has a web-site ..here.. It is very well made.

Oh, thanks for listing him, Jim. I had forgotten his name. I was tempted to get a kilt from him in the new Grampian P.D. Centennial tartan.
Then the dollar started plunging against the pound.
What tartan is yours in?

How about Keith Scott in Dundee? They made my kilt and did a fantastic job. I couldn't ask for better service.

Hello from someone down in Glasgow.
(For the record, I met my wife while she was studying at Aberdeen Uni and I have very many fond memories of Aberdeen.)
For an Aberdeen kiltmaker I'd recommend Alex Scott & co. I've a few friends with kilts from that maker and they are wonderfully tailored.
With that amount of money you should be able to get yourself a kilt and a nice jacket and waistcoat, too.
Take care and good luck!

I've got kilts from Hector Russell and Celtic Craft Centre, both in Edinburgh, and bought an Argylle jacket from Clan Albanach in Queensferry. All seemed to be good stuff. I had the best experiences with Celtic Craft Centre and Clan Albanach. Obviously, I'm no local, but the service and quality were really good at both places.

I have to second the recommendations of Alex Scott of Aberdeen - they tailored my oldest kilt (Gunn a/c) in 1973 and it is still as good as new.
Similarly I would second Chris' recommendation of Redshank Scotland in Inverary where personal attention, and quality, are of the finest available.
Being the proud owner of 27 of their kilts, I have also to highly recommend Geoffrey (Tailor) of High Street, Edinburgh. Ask for John or Howie.
Take care,
Ham.
