Hey Jock,
I think you're on to something. Living out here in the boonies we don't have many formal affairs. It is hot.
Here's probably the most formal I've ever been kilted.
Was for a coworker's Traditional Navajo Wedding held deep on the reservation on a cold, windy, rainy day at about 6,000 feet altitude. What makes it formal for me isn't the Argyle...its the necktie...
And here's the most informal I get kilted.
Was at least 100 degrees F with the sun coming back off the water.
Out here my decision on what to wear with the kilt depends as much on the weather conditions as it does the event.

I've no need for formal wear. If I ever have the need, I do think that I should like a Montrose doublet. Probably more formal than anything that I would ever need formal wear for, but it does seem to suit my own personal tastes better than an Argyll or a PC.

For me, the high formal wear is the PC.
I don't see any divergence, other than the fact that some people will wear anything to anything. In the pants world I see the same thing. At the recent televised Oscars - which is supposed to be formal - I saw everything from blue jeans to tuxedos. From my viewpoint, this is true world-wide, not just on this side of the Atlantic.

I think there are a lot of variants.
I have a PC jacket, but I rarely wear it.
I prefer a Braemar or Argyle for my formal jackets.
I'd wear a Crail with waistcoat and tie as semi-formal at night or even as formal during the day.
For super-formal I'd go for a Montrose or something similar.
As far as dressy, a Crail, Braemar or Argyle with a polo on no tie is just as dressy to me as a shirt and waistcoat.
It seems, however, that when I am in the states it's a PC or nothing for formal attire.

As formal as I can get with what I own is a black Braemar (Barathea wool and silver buttons) w/ matching waistcoat. Add either a silver or black cravat and that will suit for about anything I attend. If I were going to a truly formal affair here I would rent a PC.
I like the look of the doublets but since I am one of those folks who generates enough heat to power a small country I'd roast in one. Unless I were invited to a formal event at Holyrood palace I'd probably wear one but not likely for anything else.

I have a charcoal tweed argyle and waistcoat right now that I wear for semi formal and formal events. The events I have worn it to have usually been Christmas parties, weddings and such.
