I have really few problems with the pin, even with the "sword" pins that seem to be made for catching something!
A little more care in moving can be useful and could help us to be more conscious of our movements.

    Right side snags

I have caught my kilt pin on the console in my vehicle once. I now wear my kilt pins a little higher (about 5 inches up from the hem to the bottom of the pin.) The only snag that did a little damage was having a pleat snag on the latch plate of a door frame whilst exiting. Fortunately all the damage was deep inside the pleat and could easily be repaired without showing.

The only time I have any problems is when I'm doing something I don't do every day. For instance, one time I had to sit at a picnic table with an attached bench. Just try doing that gracefully in a kilt. Anyway, I found when I got up that I had to be careful of catching the kilt pin. I bent one up pretty badly, but at least it didn't tear the fabric.

I am cursed when it comes to kilt pins. I had a very basic, cheap claymore design originally. It was an afterthought, really. I figured I'd find one that really menat somethign to me along the way, and I did. I picked up a beautiful pin that was made with polished granite inlay on a stylized Celtic cross. That pin lasted about three days, before it disengaged itself and fell out, somewhere upon the ground of the Grandfather Mountain Games. Lucikly, I had the backup. A year later, I found another pin, much like the one I lost. This one survives to this day, but it soon lost the stone inlay, so it is semi-retired until I can get it fixed.

I did have one instance of that last pin getting caught somehow, and it actually tore two small holes in my kilt apron. Now, I am pretty much resigned to wearing a kilt pin, if only to cover the holes!

I do like the idea of the rare earth magnets, where does one find such items?

I always run into the same problem w/ my grouse claw pin, and it's that the point of the pin fastens on the top. I have attendancy to "rake" my hand (due to it being right at that level) and the point of the pin slashes my finger tip. I've gotten a pretty decent gash twice doing this. NO BLOOD ON THE KILT!

Now that I've been thinking about this thread, I noticed that I check my kilt pin often to make sure it is still there, but also put my hand out a little ways from my leg when walking by something to not get it snagged.

Don't wear one unless dressed formally. If you are dressed formally, you probably won't be doing anything to cause a snag. If dressed casually the lack of kilt pin isn't noticed.
