That sounds like a great idea, unfortunately Cali is a bit to far for me to attend the fun.

    I second the Skype idea!

    Alan H,

My sewing skills do not exist, however, my Darling Wife smiled ever so sweetly when I read her your post.

I think this means I might get to come!

Any idea about where a good source of fabric might be??? I'm in the Los Angeles area, and am certain we've got to be able to do better than the local Joann Fabric store.

Any suggestions gladly accepted (I don't mean to hijack the thread, just looking for a way to participate).

    Cheers,

I’m in, too. (Sheesh, Alan, you plan farther out than I do...)

Oh, dear! Those colors would clash mightily with my Death by Pink kilt! Maybe you could get the Wizard of BC to send another 2.5 yards of matching camouflage fabric.

I believe L.A. has a “garment district” similar to New York City’s, and fabric outlets that rival the other city, too.

Indeedy they does, been there, done the shopping too. Just make sure you ask at the door if they have wool first, it'll save you a ton of time.

Maybe you could get Yeti and I on speakerphone or webcam, but that's a bit far to go on college budgets.

    way2fractous,

Your right I had forgotten about that. I have been to the Garment District, but had not thought too much about Fabric. Guess I'll need to clear some time for a trip downtown.

Hmm, if I bring my wife who's a wiz at sewing, I wonder if I might be able to bang out 2 kilts..... with a little help from my friends....now what colors do I want or is it need?????

Skype and webcam....Hmmmm. It might be done. I will think on this.

Yes, this would be in Northern California, the SF Bay Area, and likely somewhere around the mid-peninsula, say Palo Alto or Mountain View or Redwood City.

I just got some fabric for my very first X-Kilt. The fantastic X-Kilt manual suggest cotton/poly twill. I have decided that finding cotton/poly twill is a bit of a snipe hunt. Retail fabric outlets seem to rarely carry this. I checked out Jo-Ann (great for quilting, but not much else). I then went to some of the better fabric stores in the Bay Area, Hart's fabric in Santa Cruz and Stone Mountain Daughter in Berkeley. Still no cotton/poly.

Finally, my wife suggested Discount Fabrics (in San Francisco and Berkeley). They have a fantastic selection of kiltable twills, bull denim and canvas (and all at really good prices). Still not much cotton/poly, but they do have some amazing lime green cotton/poly twill (~10 oz too)! It almost glows in the dark, and is only 2.98 a yard!

I paid a little more ($4.79/yd) for a more conventional tan 10 oz bull denim. Have others tried bull denim yet? I think it should last for ever, but I do not know how well it will hold a pleat.

The lime green though... It might make an OK alternative to pale lavender or lilac? It sure would make one stand out in a crowd!

I've wanted to make an X-Kilt out of bull denim, just havent gotten around to it. I think it will do very nicely.
