Um, so my question on the way the jacket should fit doesn't get lost...

A thought-experiment on a Highland-style Eton conversion
Thanks, Alan; very informative indeed!

I think I may have been the last generation of small children that still wore the Eton jacket and short trousers as a suit. I'm talking about the early 1960s. Mine was navy blue and at four I couldn't wait to graduate to long pants.

The mess jacket/Eaton jacket should taper from the shoulders toward the waist. Hope that helps.

They're usually somewhat tapered, so guys who are rather stout around the middle may find that the jacket that fits their tummy may be a bit big in the shoulders.
Of course, if you're on a serious budget, which is the whole point of reading this thread......if you weren't you'd get a tailored PC.....you get what you can afford. And if you're buying something from online, you don't get to test the fit beforehand, anyway.
In other words, just go buy the bloody thing!

Thank you, MacMillan of Rathdown, and Alan. Your descriptions do help a lot because the measuring instructions are sometimes unclear.

I had a mess jacket made by a local (London, ON) tailor who does a fair bit of military work for the local barracks. Under $500 including the cloth (Barathea) with matching waist coat.

I was fortunate enough to inherit my father's Naval Academy mess jacket...
Which fits well and causes a stir when worn- use sparingly!

The Etons and mess jackets sound great, but a black argyll would be nice too.

Allan,
I've read all your post on using the Eton jacket as an inexpensive dress jacket. I bookmarked the one with all the links. I've found another button source that makes both jacket and vest sizes. Here is my question: is there a source for epaulettes that could be attached to the Eton? Doesn't look like it comes with them. If I add the buttons for the "PC" look, would like the epaulettes also.
