I didn't have too many choices at the fabric store, but this seemed to be the best. I think I like it too!
I'm also doing my best to make sure the horizontal stripes are consistent in each pleat throughout the kilt.

Looking good so far.
I had thought of doing something similar, only using black with a red flame pattern in between the pleats. Maybe in the distant future.

Thank you!
Thanks for pioneering and documenting what I've considered, but didn't have a clue (or the courage) to start. Your techniques and "beta testing" will provide a great service to those who shall follow.
I really appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge and discovery with the rest of us!
Good Luck and...
Semper Fi!

I am working on a 2 tone x kilt too Black denim (with pin stripes) and red duck cloth. I found that a serger is the best way to join the fabrics.

From what I can see, you are just laying the tartan cloth on top of the denim, making the denim kilt with the tartan sewn into the pleats. This is a great idea, especially since the denim is obviously a heavier fabric than the tartan!
When I made mine, I had to sew together the strips of cotton and wool, because I couldn't have the wool touching my skin any more than absolutely necessary (itchy, itchy, itchy!). As it is, the wool still makes some contact, so I have to wear substantial stockings to be comfortable. Next time, I'm stealing your idea-I'll make a cotton kilt with the tartan wool sewn into the hidden pleats.
Thank you!
Be well,

I mostly did this because I thought it would be easier, and a bit stronger. I think it's turning ok, but the material at the hem is pretty darn thick and even with the inner pleats sewn down, I'm not sure how well it will keep the pleats. It does add great weight though. It feels like a substantial garment.
In general it's been a bit slow going (I had to tear out and redo more lines than I would like) but I think it's working.
I decided to sew the fell on the inside of the kilt and cut out the excess material. I'm still not sure if this is the best idea, but it did make it easier for me to taper it exactly right. I left enough material that I can always pull off the waistband and take out/in a few of the pleats if need be.
I still have to add the belt loops and figure out how to close it. I'm thinking buttons, but I have to figure out how to make button holes with my machine.
Thanks so much for all the support and encouragement! It's really made this project possible.
Here's the last photo I took.
