Like others, what works for me when I lust after a tartan is to start saving pictures of it. Could have pics from this forum or galleries/albums of members of this forum. Or Google Images. More commonly I'll look up the clan webpages of that tartan and often find pics in the galleries on the clan webpages if its a clan tartan.
As pointed out, an trained/experienced kiltmaker can pleat your kilt however you like. I always use their expertise and ask what the down side of pleating it "my way" is and how they would pleat it given their choice. Never been dissappointed.
By the time I've decided to order most of my kilts I've already accumulated a bunch of pics of the tartan. Others, I've just had to go on spec.
