When I saw the title of the thread I initially thought that Samantha Brown was launching another travel show. (as in Passport to Europe, Passport to Latin America and a new one on me - Passport to China.)

Maybe we can get a new show on that network, Kilted Travels.

Granted, I'm not as cute and goofy as Samantha.

Now that would be interesting. Should Hamish be our tour guide?
Back to the original post, Grant do come and see the U-Boat if you have the chance, it is an interesting exhibit along with the rest of the museum. The Field Musuem of Natural History, the Art Institute, Planetarium and Aquarium are definately high on our family's list when be make the trek into town, and well worth checking out also if you have the time.

This is a total aside from the main thrust of the thread...well...sorta...

...but if any of you do make it to Chicago and are going to do the museum rounds, I highly recommend this:

    http://www.citypass.com/city/chicago.html

It looks like most cities have one of these "uni-pass" things available and they're very good. We got one in New York and it was super.

The museums used to be free. The "suggested admissions" are now almost brutal. Years ago, corporate sponsorship took care of all the expenses. The Museum of Science and Industry was the best example. The exhibit on petroleum was sponsored by Standard Oil, the communications exhibit was sponsored by Bell Telephone...you get the picture...corporate propaganda abounded but most people saw past it and got the information anyway. Those days are WAY gone so the attendee has to carry the expense.

Wow, Standard Oil and Bell Telephone!! Yeah, those days are LONG gone!

I'm toying with the idea of heading to Chicago for the event in September. Can anyone say whether it'd be worth the visit, or, at least, worth it as a springboard to a trip to Chicago?

I haven't been there since 1972, figure there might be a few changes.

1972? Welcome to the future, my friend!

Even though I live here, I can see Chicago as a good destination when I compare it to the five or six other cities that I gladly visit again at the drop of a hat. Since we're sucking up to get the Olympics, it's even better...most people are on their good behaviour and it's Bread And Circuses everywhere.

It ain't Grandfather Mountain, but how often do you get to see caber tossing in the middle of a huge canyon of skyscrapers? It's very surreal, I assure you. It's a general good time but I would hope that you'd get a few other activities in as just coming for this event might be a bit of a letdown. Anybody interested, PM me and I'll give you the "good, cheap hotels downtown" list...but I'd seriously think about booking ahead if you're going to take advantage of them. One of the BIG secrets about Chicago Celtic Fest is the Friday evening event...the musical preview at the Cultural Center in Preston Bradley Hall (which is, itself, worth seeing let alone hearing some tuneage in...it's all done in beautiful mosaics...lots of gold). We got to last years and it was stellar. Lots of "spontaneous" Irish dancing during the sets...yeah, right...spontaneous...sure.

It is a hoot, though. Hoping that Canadian Tourism extends my wife another invite to one of their events this year...last years was superb and I met some of the nicest people ever.

Because the park where I work is located on the border, visitors often ask what papers are needed to cross the border. This brochure from US Customs and Border Protection answers all the questions. http://www.cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/..._tearsheet.pdf

Well Dave...if you were to host I suspect the first episode would be titled "Passport to Hooters". That might prove to be even more popular than Samantha Brown.

And since that's the official one that gets handed out at work, that is the one to go by.
The aforementioned passport cards are supposed to be available next month, if I remember the last set of "talking points" that they gave us, and at $45, they're half the price of a passport.

Ruanaidh - you work in the Chamizal? The best thing about working the Bridge of the Americas was having the Chamizal next door to look at.

The Chamizal it is - celebrating the peaceful settlement of a hundred year boundry dispute through the visual and performing arts.
