Lovely job so far on this and all your projects!
Thank you! I am enjoying creating the kilts (for myself and others).

Yes, I decided against using the strong red on the outside (although that would make for a nice change of color to gray when swinging.

I made the hem (after all the pleat-stitching).It wasn't so bad. I decided afterwards that I didn't like the selvedge on the fabric and also to reduce the overall length. The fabric came as 44" double-width and my drop is 20" (+2" rise) -- I split the fabric exactly down the middle. So there's no excess fabric that's why I got more than I would normally need.

My denim knife-pleated kilt keeps its pressed pleats rather well. I think the pleat depth helps with it as well - the deeper it is the better it keeps the pleats. I used lots of steam and pressure while pressing the pleats.

UPDATE on Kilt#4 (My first Tartan)

Here's the finished product: DIY kilt #4. It's my first attempt at using a tartan fabric. It's a lightweight Stewart Gray polyviscose fabric from Joanns.
31 knife pleats, pleated to the double stripe (yellow/white) on the "inner" side of the pleat (0.77" pleats).
Double-fringed. I plan to add a buckle on the right side hip -- because I dance quite a bit (square, two-step, etc.) and I realize that it'll be functional for me.)

It's much easier to work with lines already in the fabric (like in, well, tartans!) -- i.e. I didn't have to worry about 90° angles and parallel lines.

It has a really good swing to it.

I'm as impressed as everyone else with your kiltmaking accomplishments, but I might be just as impressed by your time management accomplishments! I think you've made three kilts in three weeks in your spare time. That? Is amazing!
