    Around the house it's more comfortable to go without, but when I go out the door I always wear a sporran - normally a day sporran with a leather strap. For more dressy occasions, I have a semi-dress sporran and chain. With a Utilikilt, I wouldn't bother with a sporran.

    I still wear a sporran with this kilt but removed it for the photo. As many have already said "casual kilt with pockets, no sporran needed, traditional kilt when dressed up, sporran required, traditional kilt with pockets dressed casually, your choice."
    This picture is (no offense meant, Big Miley) exactly why I wear one with a trad kilt. I just think that a trad kilt without a sporran looks bad. Well, with a belt and a nice buckle it looks alright. But I personally think it needs SOMETHING more. It just looks incomplete to my eyes. But as in all things, to each his own!

    To each his own, indeed. I, too, think that a kilt needs a sporran and belt to be complete, but that may just be what my particular eye expects. Do what you like--it's not like the kilt police will wrestle you to the ground and conduct a cavity search. However, that being said, why would you forego the convenience and carrying capacity of a sporran, say a wonderful Buzz Kidder? Check them out on the website--great stuff at a reasonable price.

    Cheers!

    Hmmm...if I go to the bar in my casual kilt I sometimes don't wear at sporran. Gets in the way sometimes...but always when formally dressed.

    I'm not a sporran fan. These days I usually wear my pocketless kilts when I will either have my backpack, or won't need any pockets. As for the appearance, I think a kilt belt with a nice buckle is enough to complete the look.

    Belt = always.

    Sporran = I'd say always, but some get away w/o with a contemporary with a bunch of buttons and pockets.

    I would have to agree with the quote. But Rex is also correct. I often take the sporran off when doing Scottish Country Dance practice.

    Unless going black/white tie, or traditional, I would say, wear a sporran when you "need" one. If you dont need it, why wear it?
    Though I wouldn't mind a "traditional" with pockets.

    Being a traditionalist kilt-wearer I would wear a sporran whenever I wear the kilt. Anyway I don't like that huge expanse of naked kilt and a sporran (and belt) breaks up the look.

    That's me too.
    But (different strokes) with or without a sporran, I always wear a belt.
