You could just generalise it and record the "population's" reactions instead of "individual's". To me it seems like anthropology and phsycology are pretty closely related, and one is just the other applied to large groups. But of course this is just speculation from a person in neither field.

Ah, see now we're getting into Sociology. Anthropologists observe cultures naturally and exploring how those cultures operate. Sociology is the social relations and interactions between people. Psychology is the study of the mental process and behavior.

So if I wore a kilt and studied an individual's reaction, it would be psychology. If I wore a kilt and studied a group's reaction, it would be sociology. If I wore a kilt, spent time with a group of kilt-wearers, and studied their kilted culture, that, my friends, is anthropology.

Though, some anthropologists think that sociology is a crock and just trying to butt in on anthropology's turf. Sometimes I agree. Sometimes.

Awesome! I'll have to read that. Though I'm a little worried that none of the reviews are from anthropologists, just literary critics...

The Chronicle of Higher Education and two academic Journals aren't exactly "literary critics", Greg.

My mistake, thanks for clarifying the difference for me. Yes, for Anthropology you need to be as inconspicuous as possible so as not to disrupt the goings on of "the natives".

There are plenty of venues where a kilt is far less out of the ordinary, such as Fourth Friday here in Fayetteville when the Cape Fear Valley Scottish Clans meets for it monthly "wee dram" night, on during our International Folk Festival. Yes, you need to fade into the woodwork to do the observation, but you could pick your venue to make kilt wearing possible, at least part of the time during your field trip. Like going to the beach in a business suit would not be good if you don't want to be noticed.
