About time. When we were on the Royal Mile in May there were spots in front of stores where you had to step off the sidewalk and into the street to get around a shop - not much fun when the street barriers are down.

If these items are actually restricting movement and causing people to step into the street, that's a legitimate concern. But if this is just trying to make the area look classier, then this is going way too far. Without seeing it all myself, I couldn't say which assessment is accurate.

Common sense is the way to go. However this seems like a matter for the Scots, I don't think anyone outside of Scotland or Edinburgh can have much of an legitimate opinion.

Frankly, both the title of this thread and the approach people seem to be taking to it is misleading. I don't see anything from the article which indicates anyone was targeting, or doing anything about, the so-called "tartan tat problem." Indeed, it looks to me as if this is a somewhat heavy-handed enforcement of local sign ordinances, and that everyone was targeted equally.

Hmm... I wonder where the confiscated merchandise might end up if the fines aren't paid. Does the UK have police auctions like they do in the US?

Signs and property have long needed this action. It was a billboard (for a pub) over a parking sign that got me a parking fine in the High St because you couldn't read the restrictions.
It's not just our "favourite" tat shops being targeted and that's all to the good.

Actually, I have to say I'm on the side of the businesses on this one. I'm all for boycotting them and educating the public about where to get goof quality kilts etc. However, having the government steal the merchandise and signs and such on a legal technicality without any warning is just plain wrong.
