I have, in the past used a heavyweight non-fusible interfacing instead of hair canvas and it's worked out well. This stuff is generally available at most sewing stores, but make SURE to get the non-fusible stuff (you can't iron it and thereby make it stick to the material).

That is what I had in minde as possible alternative, too.

Don't forget that denim continues to shrink with time, and that the blue threads and the white threads shrink at different rates. That's why so many folks caution against using it for kilts...I'm guessing that the same differential shrinking could occur if denim is used for reinforcing.

I have to agree with what has been said. Most hair canvass is not washable. But (and I don't remember where she got it) my wife bought a bolt of a washable "hair canvass" made of nylon and polyester, woven, not felted like Pellon (tm), for use in the liturgical vestments she was making at the time.
Yes, regular canvass can be used, or any other firm non-stretchable fabric. Of course it needs to be pre-shrunk if you are going to wash the finished garment. Since you have experienced seamstresses in the household, just explain what it is that you are needing the interfacing for.
Sounds like your progress is good!

I think I found possible replacement for hair canvas. Ribbon, 3cm wide which is used for sewing and hanging curtains. It's light, strong and washable. Will post a picture in the near future.

Yes, absolutely. And remember that, even if you don't iron it on when you're actually making the kilt, the minute you press the kilt, it _will_ be ironed on!! And you don't want that.

So, here it si. Possible material for stabilizer instead hair canvas. It's used as a ribbon for hanging curtains and it's light, strong and impossible to stretch.
Any comments, opinions? I've already used it on my kilt (not yet finnished).

For my first kilt in DPM I used a strip of webbing that is similar, though probably heavier than your stabiliser, and that has been very sucessful.
I am trying to remember what I did with the rest of it so l can put it into more kilts.
You need to press that area of your kilt at a temperature the webbing can take, if it contains a man made fibre it will go crispy, or worse, if overheated. That means even if it is underneath other materials.
I still recall with horror the time I decided to press an errant pleat on a cotton kilt and melted a Nylon belt - luckily onto the iron, not the kilt.

Thanks! Good point. I must not forget this. Otherwise I do believe it's good replacement for hair canvas. And certainly can be washed on 40 deg. C. I was looking for hair canvas, but older sales ladies in shops did remember to have it far, far ago. this ribbon is very cheap (0.9 EUR for 2m).
Will post some pics when my kilt is finished in separate thread.
