Air Travel Question

I traveled by plane from Oslo to Narvik today. Just before going through the security checkpoint, I discovered that I'd forgotten to remove my TFCK kilt pin from the apron of my kilt. I left it on, and went through the metal detector, which I set off, naturally, and had to stand while a security guard ran a detector wand over me. Wonder of wonders, he didn't even remark on the kilt pin, and let me pass. During the course of the journey, I passed through two more checkpoints and had the same thing happen. I never expected to make it to my destination with that kilt pin still in my possession!

The level of security you experience in the airport is dependent on the person who is tasked with it. One person may go by the book, while the next is more lax in their interpretation. With regards to checked luggage, airlines require the bags be left unlocked so that suspicious items on the xray screen may be checked. This unfortunately can invite theft. I have a friend
who ships what would normally be his checked luggage via FedEx to his destination. He then picks it up when he arrives (he still takes a carry on bag with him.)

If you can carry on MRE's, can you heat and eat on the aircraft?

I'm betting that when that MRE heater starts steaming and hissing that someone is gonna get nervous. That is if you don't get stopped when your pouring the water into it!

Actually, there are now locks widely available at least in the US, which allow one to lock one's luggage, but have ameans for TSA personnel to unlock them. I realize that this depends on the honesty of TSA people, but since a presume a rash of complaints would be focus on a small number of suspects, most would not take the risk.

I think this only applies to the US. In Scandinavia and Europe, your bags may be locked. Airlines do advise travelers bound for the US to get the special locks that can be opened by the authorities.

I take guns in checked baggage regularly without a problem so I would think a small knife would be fine.

Has anyone had a problem when traveling with sgian dubh packed in "check baggage"?

I travel alot. I haven't had a problem with my Sgian in my checked baggage. However it could be lost. So if it is a valuable, you might want to leave at home.
