I've read the series myself and liked it. I've been reading sci-fi, fantasy, westerns and everything else forever it seems like. My grandfather was a big fan of westerns and had all of Zane Greys books. I actually learned to read from his reading them to me, before I started school. I still have them in my collection. Getting back on topic, If it's sci-fi or fantasy, odds are I've read it at some point in time.

I'm an auld Heinlein fan, have read Stirling in the Niven franchise-universe (Man-Kzin Wars) and in collaboration with Jerry Pournelle.
My recent favorite (for something completely different) is the Neal Stephenson Baroque Cycle.

I've read lots of Heinlein and generally like all of his stories. John Twelve Hawks has written a couple of interesting stories, waiting for the next installment to come out. Greg Rucka has an interesting read in his Perfect Dark series. Any mention in the books what Lazarus Long's tartan looks like? Don't recall any description, but it has been a while since I've read Heinlein.

I've read the first trilogy of that series, and it's okay... but not particularly great. It read like a SCAtian's fantasy, which is fine... I'm a SCAtian myself. I'd like to think that real members of the Society would have deprived the Protector of his head much earlier, however.
And I'm not in on registering or running up the MacKenzie tartan. Too many other draws on my money; too many other tartans to purchase first.

yep, i'm a scifi fan, and have read that series ( and liked it). Re; the tartan: looks a bit like the maple leaf tartan ( plus orange stripes) ( or maybe it's just my monitor?);0). Having recently been through getting together enough peole for a custom weave ( did it through Fraser & Kirkbright, in Vancouver BC) ( min order is 30 meters) , can't afford more tartan at present ( and already have a Maple Leaf Belted plaid), Good luck.

Not bad books. I prefer the Island in the sea of time trilogy though.
They are related. The "Dies the Fire" earth is what happens to the rest of earth when Nantucket is transported to the Bronze Age. Still two more novels to come in the series, can't wait to see how Stirling ties it all up.

Yup, I know.
I'm quite a fan of SMS I first encountered him when he collaborated with Anne McAffery on some of her sci-fi.
Have you tried Peshwar Lancers? It's a cracking read.
If you like celtic inspired stuff, try the song of albion series by Stephen Lawhead. (Paradise war, silver hand, endless knot)
It's very, very good

I still got several Star Trek, and Anne Rice "Witches" series to go before I even think of reading anything else.
Besides, when do I have time to read???
I pretty much stick w/ Trek, I did like Farscape, Babylon 5 and love the new Battlestar Galactica. I hate star wars.

Being a total nerd/geek I find myself reading The Andromeda Strain almost annually since highschool.
I've always been a sci-fi nerd, but I get worse as I age.... I wonder if I could get that little label that reads "kilted member" changed to "kilted space marine"?
