Remember, the ribbons are the modern vestiges of the drawstring that was used to size many old broad bonnets, which would, of course, have been tied. (Regardless of one's marital status).

Matt is right, of course. However, if you want to give a nod to the (questionable) tradition, instead of having the balmoral tied yourself, make a point of having your new wife tie the bow for you after the ceremony. Whether it's a true custom or not, you can start your own little custom.

Aye, no harm in having a little fun with an old-wives tale, that's what fairy tales and folk stories are and many of our wedding traditions (rice, tossing the bouqet and garter,...) Just know there is no international standard code on balmoral bows Now blue ribbons are a different story

I have to say that I've never seen balmoral ribbons tied like that or Glen's in my neck of the woods, so it's new to me. Most of the tied ones I've seen have been on military balmorals, and the ribbons and knot are quite a bit smaller, with the ends horizontal. Just an observation, that's all, and maybe I'm not very observant.

Is it Balmoral bow myth season again? I love it when this time of year rolls around! Its kind of like apple picking season...

Call me a non-conformist I guess - I love having my ribbons free to blow in the wind.

Me too. It suits my personality better and for me it's more asthetically pleasing. Reminds me of when I enjoyed a ponytail half way down my back.

Neither have I and I think that Jock you were meaning a simple eye knot. This allows the tails to hang down together. They are a tad shorter but if you throw a stitch in the middle of the the knot it won't move.

I am not quite sure what you mean by "simple eye knot",but the knots on the four of my balmorals are the same as you would use to tie a bow tie and the result is the same. No hanging down bits at all. You all could follow my brother's route and just cut the ribbons off!
