Here's a great 'starting point' to know if a tartan will look beest pleated to sett or stripe...
Take a piece of the cloth and 'squint your eyes' at it. If 1 particular line really POPS or 'jumps out' at you, then it will look great pleated to that stripe. If NOTHING really stands out by itself, then it should probably be pleated to sett.

The gold stripe REALLY pops on the Gordon. It looks great pleated to that line.
Nothing REALLY pops that same way on the MacDonald Modern. This one is usually pleated to sett.
