My mother has made two sets from a pattern that knits the cuff facing opposite the calf, so to speak, so when you turn it down once the cuff and calf patterns are both facing outward. It's the pattern discussed in a DIY thread here, I can pull it up if anybody's interested and hadn't seen that thread.

I like a moderate turnover of about 3 inches, myself.

Also, if I'm wearing the "traditional style" garters-the wrap around and tie type, with the fringe on the end- I generally only like a little bit of fringe sticking out. Maybe a scant inch. It just looks more understated and sleek to my eyes. It's all a matter of personal taste, really.

I don't like a wide turn down, but some of my hose are long and so I turn them down twice for a double fold.

This allows the pattern on the cuff of the hose to be the correct side out.

I'm very confused now. I must have been wearing my Lewis hose incorrectly..., but the cable pattern seemed to be on the inside of the hose. The ridges of the pattern are much more pronounced on the inside of the cuff, that is. I would have never known...

Ted, You are correct. The Lewis Hose are designed to turn over just once. The pattern on the top is reversed from hose which are machine made and available from other companies.

Argyle Hose are also usually only turned once. And of course Castellated Hose are not turned at all.

Then there those of us with big feet, long, but skinny legs (from shin bone to the knob just below the knee is 16" (40 cm). . .Heel to that knob is 18+" (46cm).
To get hose that will fit my feet, they assume that my calves must be somewhere around 16-20" (40-50 cm). The reality is 14" (36 cm).

This means that to keep them from looking like Nora Batty's from Last of the Summer Wine, have to pull them all the way up, and turn them down, and up, and occasionally down again! I have also had hose that I turned down twice (four layers) to get them to look good.

I really should get some custom knitted ones, but the price is a bit out of my range right now. I'll just add it to the list.

Like Rex, I prefer to balance the fold over with the amount of flesh visible between the bottom of the knee and the top of the hose. I also like to allow approximately 2" of the flashes to show. Of course the above becomes a very loose guide when I have only 10 minutes to dress and get out the door.

    Steve,

MOST kilt hose I have encountered are designed to be turned just once, which is why I was a bit confused by your earlier post in this thread. If there is a pattern, it will be on the inside of the cuff, so that it will look correct when turned over.

The only hose I have experience with that were purposefully designed to be turned over more than once were the "piper's hose" from Gaelic Themes that were designed to have cuff folded three or four times to give you extra thickness.
