My UK Survival did quite well in 15 degree (F) weather the other morning - I was wearing heavy socks, underwear (didn't feel right, somehow), and a hat. As long as the wind wasn't blowing and I was moving, I was fine. Then again, I'm pretty warm-blooded.

That little half apron was always the the worst for me in the winter. Which is one of the reasons I sold my UKs.
Down to about 45°F is 5-6 yard PV, down to 38°F is 8 yd PV, down to 30°F is my hemp RKilt, below 30°F is wool (13, 16, or 18 oz).

I haven't worn my Amerikilt, Sport Kilt or USA Kilt in a little over six weeks. It's just too cold for them.

You post is pretty much true for me. Not that I loose interest in my contemporary and non-traditinal kilts, I simply switch to wool at 55 F or below. I'm 62 and my skin is getting thinner. I have the opposite problem when the weather gets warm - heat intolerance. So, 70-75 F is about the max for me when wearing wool. Told my wife that it's the reason I need so many kilts .

I had my SWK out last night in 30 degree weather and came to the conclusion that it's a perfect time to break out the 16oz kilts that are too heavy to wear in the summer, So I agree that many people hang up the Contemporaries and the Casuals for the Heavy weights.

I don't have any wool kilts (yet), but have a few contemporary ones (three UKs, an Alpha, and a couple that don't get worn to work). I wear kilts to work most of the time (although I don't always wear them for my commute to work--I often ride a bicycle to work).

While certainly not as warm as I imagine a wool kilt to be, I've not had problems with temperatures to a little below freezing. My legs have enough muscle mass that they don't chill easily.

However, I will note that even if wearing p@nt$, I get cold far more easily than I did twenty years ago. I would not have even bothered with a jacket for the little time I spend outside these days with my metabolism what it used to be. Ah, youth.

I think anything that holds rising hot air is gonna be useful. Here's a pic of me warm and in the snow with my now outgrown medical white Utilikilts Original. Lightweight 65% polyesther 35% cotton kilt.



Course when the cold weather hits I dig out my two leather contemporary kilts, both my RKilts leather and Utilikilts leather are very warm and toasty in cold weather. Have worn the later in a blizzard with no ill effects.

Here's the leather UK at the Grand Canyon when it was 8 degrees F out with a strong updraft from the canyon.



Will see if I can get a pick of the leather RKilt this winter when/if it snows.

Even here in the SW, I'll wear my military weight trad kilts in the winter months.

Bearing in mind that this is my first winter kilted I have found that the AK's and SWK economies have stayed in the closet. My SWK heavyweights and WPG Gordon have seen some much heavier rotation.


edit: I have had my SWK standard out since it has gotten cool but I think that my hit the rack unless it hits about 35-40 degrees. But that is partly due to the fact that the wind is the real problem with lighter weight fabric.

Perish the thought that anyone should mistake it for something else, but I think they outta make a winter kilt with optional snap-on panels to extend the length!
