ebay kilts

I've bought quite a few budget kilts from Heritage of Scotland and Fredonline321 via ebay,and I have not been disappointed, all have been good value for the price paid, but I would never use ebay to buy an expensive kilt. For a more upmarket kilt I would deal with a local kilt shop or with one of the kiltmakers on this forum.

I ordered a kilt in the muted Wilson tartan from Bobilicious and am extremely pleased with it. It was delivered faster than promised, fit perfectly and was equal in quality to kilts costing twice as much as I paid. It is a first class 8 yrd knife pleated kilt. I will definately purchase from him again and highly recommend his kilts.

You're right on all the measurements. If your measurement for #3 is 22, the overall length will most likely be 24 inches, as the rise [above the waist] is usually about 2 inches. It can be more or less, but that's the general rule.

You mention a 3" belt. Generally speaking, that would be centered at the waistline, so 1.5" or so above it.

Edit to add: You asked about the fell as well. That's usually about 1/3 the *total* length of the kilt (the third measurement + the two inches). So in the 22 inch example... two more inches for the rise gives us 24." The fell, being 1/3 of that, would be 8."

Thanks, Chase. I've just checked my closet here in Vancouver and the (rough) average measurement for all 8 of them I have here (it's too late/early to call Scotland and ask for the ones there to be checked) is 25 to 25.5 inches, the fell is between 8.25 and 8.75 and all of them are a measured 22 inches from navel to mid-knee. That means that the difference is above the hip bone/navel. The total length is perhaps only important by an inch because we tend to wear a kilt higher on the ribs in Scotland than you do in North America. He should, perhaps, be asking for the width of the belt I intend to wear, but if he took a guess and said 2.5 inches (the norm), he would make the kilt at 24.5 to 25.0 in total.

That was confusing, but thanks for walking me through it.

I'll discuss all this with him and post my opinion on his service and product.

You may want to ask the maker if he requires the DROP measurement or the LENGTH measurement. The DROP is the length from the top of the hip to the middle of the knee. USUALLY kiltmakers will add a 1.5" to 2" RISE to the drop to give you the LENGTH of the kilt (22" drop + 2" RISE = 24" length). When referring to LENGTH, kiltmakers usually mean the overall length from top to bottom of the kilt (or about 1 to 2 inches above the naval to the middle of the knee).

The reason he's asking for height is to double check your length measurement. If you say your LENGTH is 25 and you're only 5'2" tall, there's something wrong and he knows he needs to contact you.

Tartans include: Honour of Scotland (very similar to Pride of Scotland), Royal Stewart, Black Watch, Irish National, and maybe Black Stewart.

I hope that I will eventually explain why this isn't too far away from the thread. I would like to be able to refer an online kiltmaker to you because his correspondence, workmanship and materials, is fantastic, but I have some problems with his measurement system that I have to resolve before I can comfortably do that.

How would you read the following measurement instructions? I have never ordered a kilt on-line before (and I have something like 30 acquired over the last 50 years, all measured by the kiltmakers). This one is on-line and the maker has asked for:

1. Waist =
2. Seat =
3. Length = hip bone or bellybutton to mid-knee
4. Your Full height =
5. Pleat: to sett or to stripe

I understand the first question as relating to true waist (i.e., above the hip bone). Yes?

And the second as the widest measurement around the "fattest" part of my butt (no comment, please, I am working in it!). Yes?

I'm not sure why the fourth is required (not to worry, though) and I understand the fifth.

My question really relates to the third item. I think that measurement -- with an appropriate allowance for a belt (say 3.0 inches) -- sets the full length of the kilt. It's just a strange figure for me maybe because I'm not a kiltmaker.

If the hip(or bellybutton)-to-mid-knee measurement is, say, 22, does that mean that the total length of the kilt should be 25.0 inches? If not, then why is that measurement required? Something to do with the fell?
