The Choice is easy. You should get an Utilikilt. Utilikilt doesn't require you to use a sporran because of the cargo pockets.

Check that measurement, and decide which sort of rise you'd prefer.
USA Casual kilts are made to order, and the price is still $100 -- add another $25 and you can get it in two weeks.

I am looking for a more traditional rise. (at the navel) Just because I think it looks better. I have about $350 clams to spend. I would like to get a kilt I can be proud to wear. I really want to thank all of you for taking the time to help me with this. I would have never guessed it would be this hard to pick out a kilt. But I think it will be well worth the time to get what I am looking for. I fell like I am picking out my first house.LOL

If you have $350 to spend then I'd say go to USAKilts and look at the Semi Traditional Model.

USA Kilts--they are a made to order shop, but do have very nice "off the rack" casuals in a limited number of tartans. You have to call them to order one.

Browse these sites and see if you find something you like. Good luck!
I would second this. I have both an Amerikilt and a USA Kilt. Both are very easy to care for, and very durable. So with all the existing comments, I'll just chime in with a vote. USAK for tartan, AK for solid colors. I don't recomend the SWK acrylics- I just don't like acrylic material. I have three, and probably won't be buying any more. They don't breathe well, so I sweat in them, and they snag on everything because they are a very loose weave.

Oh, and to the guy who posted the Scottish Tartans Museum canvas kilts- thanks for that!! I didn't know they had those! I'm going to make one of those my next kilt!

I've not ordered a kilt from them, though I have placed 4 other orders through them (sporran, tartan fabric, argyll, and another sporran on the way). Their service is great. Once or twice I've sent eamils to rocky around midnight, and received a response within an hour or so. Doesn't happen all the time (at that time of night) of course, but the responses are very fast, and very thorough.

As for their kilts, I'll let those who have made the kilt purchases speak for them, though I've heard only good things.

    Ditto!

But camellid did list a bunch of activities that might be better suited for a USAK casual or a Utilikilt--both of which are easy to care for and can be dressed up quite nicely (without all the trad peripherals) for an evening at the local pub.
