It took me about 4 hours to find just a pic of it. Like I said before I am new to the whole kilt and tardan kinda thing. What I have figured out is it something that you just can't stop thing about LOL I have learned a great deal about my famliy history. I never knew to mush about where my family came from. Thanks Todd

Actually the semi-trad is a good choice if money is part of the equation. As to dressing up or down, that is the beauty of the kilt.
I have only traditional 8 yard types at the moment, and I go all the way from very informal (T-shirt, with a smarmy message, such as : "why do they call it a kilt? because a lot of people were kilt when they called it a skirt" to a Braemar jacket, formal vest, boiled shirt and black tie formal, and everytlhing in between.
I also have a Crail jacket converted from a sport coat, they all look sharp. I am looking for an ex-Navy mess jacket to go up to white-tie level, perhaps a Montrose. Depends what I can find to fit the budget.
Happy kilting

Unfortunately Wood modern doesn't appear to be a standard tartan so that's probably going to be an expensive kilt to have made. The design is registered but the fabric isn't normally available so you have to order it specially. I have the same problem with the Bruce Hunting tartan. I'd love to have it, but can't afford it.
have a look at the scotweb link on x marks here to give you an idea of starting prices.

Yeah I looked up a few days ago and made some phone calls It will be pretty high but it's a kilt that I really really want. So I am going to try to get the deal going in a few months or so. I will most likely get the package deal from who ever I get it from.(Formal) I will be so happy when I get it. My grandfather will be too. He has been wanting me to get it for a long time. He has always wanted one too. So I will see if they can make me a better deal if, I get two packages deals from them. One for me and One for him.

You can dress up or down an 8-yd trad (or 4-yd box pleat) very well. The handsewns will look best dressed up, but the USAK semi-trads dress up well also.
As for the Wood being uncommon, you can lower the cost by going with a 4-yd box-pleated kilt instead of an 8yd, and I think Matthew Newsome (of the Scottish Tartans Museum, M.A.C. Newsome here on the boards) can get kilt-length special runs at a decent price.
Best of luck on getting your kilt done, and the semi-trad is a good choice in the meantime.

I agree. The kilt is the thing, the accoutrements will do the rest.

In my experience you can dress any kilt down -- unless the kilt is too warm for the weather.
