Which Sporran with Prince Charlie?

My only formal sporran is my Ferguson Britt glengayle beaver fur sporran. It's wonderfull because it both dresses up and dresses down, as with the pictures of the skunk one above. I'd like to get a skunk one eventually some day too, but that's going to have to wait a long time for me to find the money to do so =)

Still, so weird..."formal" around here is reasonably new jeans, maybe ironed, your best boots shined, a white dressy shirt - preferrably with western styling, and a western style sport coat and bola tie or elegant beads...

It is my belief that Formal is Formal be it in Toronto, LA, New York, London, Glasgow, or heck even Page Arizona. I think it would be a shame for you to go ahead with such a nice made to measure Prince Charlie rig and then wear a sporran that just doesn't go. I'd say the best thing would be to go through the L&M Sporran builder and make something that is unique to you, then order it from Matt or another L&M dealer, or possibly find a Ferguson Britt that you are not ethically opposed to.

I was thinking more of how I can fabricate one. Guess I got some reading to do on how hard turquoise is to work with.

And to get back on topic: I think beaver would look pretty sharp. It's got a nice lustre to it that some other furs don't have. Good luck, happy "hunting" (pun very much intended)

I forgot how close you are to the Rez, you could find a jewler to cast the cantle with a native motif, lots of leather workers on the Rez as well who could do the beaver for you. When you got done it would be a one of a kind.

Only the silver cantle fur sporran with the Prince Charlie; though, horse hair counts too. My source for that is, of course, MacMillan of Rathdown. That means you can't go wrong with that kind of sporran paired with the PC.

I agree with McMurdo... formal is formal. So, if you are okay with beaver, get someone to make you a silver cantled beaver skin sporran (or re-cover one of those rabbit skin ones yourself). While you are at it, you might see if you can get a local jeweler to set a nice bit of turquoise in the center of the cantle to match your sgian dubh.

Ron, like you, I do not like "MASKS". To me they look like "ROAD KILL"
I love FUR. & own several Sporrans/bags that are fur "covered. (a couple I have made myself.) IMHO, there are 2 "DRESS" FURS- BEAVER (#!) & FOX (#2)(grey, silver, red).

#1.A Ferguson Britt (FB) BEAVER with a Leather cantle. (Black or Brown to match your "primary" colors ( one of these is on my WISH LIST)

#2. FB Grey fox (or if he will make it a RED or SILVER)

These could not only be worn for "FORMAL DRESS",IMHO" but are would be GREAT for "std.Dress" I know these are $$$, but since this will worn with one of "KATHY'S" GREAT KILTS, a CHEAP SPORRAN ("FORMAL WEAR)" = NO WAY !

If you desire to stay away from fur, then one of FB's Leather with leather cantle.
NOTE - MacMillan Rathdown's SUGGESTION IS SUPPER if you really want to make a "STATEMENT"

Another option (less expensive) might be something like these. Picture #1 is a "beaver" I made. (the "beaver rosette" is removable, as is the "crest") The
2nd one is the abve with a RED Fox tail. The 3rd one is a Thorfinn with a grey fox flap.

I understand, sadly, that just doesn't fit with my personal or spiritual beliefs....some fur, okay, the head - no way. Sorry. Just me.

Imagine it may also go back to some childhood trauma from when my father gave my mother some fox stoles with the heads on and my grandfather Murdoch told me it was my pet cat. I bought it, was back before we knew I needed eyeglasses....

Ron, I too have an issue with fur but that does not keep you from getting a dress sporran. With the amount of militant "you MUST wear it this way..." threads hereabouts lately I'm sure someone will say this does not work but I don't really care.

After seeing my picture this year on the XMarks staff Christmas card I immediately called Rocky and asked him to rush ship this sporran to me. I'm quite pleased with it.

And don't forget the MacMillan of Rathdown solution to the fur sporran-objection problem. Get a horse hair sporran.

When I can afford it, I will have a formal sporran made and it will have symbolic uses of serten fur, as well as, cantle designs.

May I suggest a sea turtle, perhaps turquoise , somehow worked into the design of the cantle, Ron.
