Just remember that the Maple Leaf is an *asymmetric tartan*. This is an issue that you have to take into consideration because the tartan comes double width. If you order 4 yards double width, you'll have to put a hem in the kilt (because you can't rotate the tartan to get the sett and the twill lines to match once you've split a double width piece in half to get 8 yards). If you order 8 yards double width, you can split the tartan in half lengthwise and make two kilts out of the 8 yard, single width pieces. If two of you guys want to take advantage of the F&K remnants, it might be best to order one 8 yard piece and split it.

Is 4.5" the typical repeat for Maple Leaf? That seems a bit small to me.

That is definitely small for a 16 oz tartan. I must have missed it - how did you arrive at 4.5" for the repeat? Oh - I see it. On the F&K site. Huh - that seems really small to me. Their Black Watch lists a sett size of 3" for 11 oz tartan - that seems really small, too.

Forgot about the asymmetric tartan pattern thing Barb, thanks for reminding me or I would have made a big mistake had I ordered. Those two different brown stripes really do make a difference don't they.
If anybody wants to go halfsies on an order of 8 meters (actually 8.74 yards) for around $200US plus shipping one of us can order it and the other pay the first for their half plus the secondary shipping after splitting the piece lengthwise. Otherwise we can get together and choose a common kiltmaker and just send the whole piece to them to have our kilts made simultaneously (give or take). Would cost each around $100 US plus shipping charges to get it around the continent wherever it needs to go. should not be any customs issues due to the price. Any takers?

If you can't find someone else to go halfsies, let me know. I might be interested in buying the other half (tartan junkie that I am......). And, if you're looking for a kiltmaker, I'm always available!

Oh well :crap: Pulled the trigger on 4 yards before all this discussion. . . guess it's hemmed, unless someone else did the same and we can trade halves!
EDIT: I already have two inquiries on the excess, or it may go into a pair of slacks for my mother. Thanks!

You can call or email Gordon via the info on the Web page, he's always helpful. Maybe you can combine orders with someone. Or you could make 2 box-pleats

I'll sell the second half as a box-pleat length, fabulous solution! I was wobbling between a box or knife anyway, that just makes the decision easier. Plus the fact that an 8-yard knife pleat (or double box) in that weight is not really the thing for Sun Diego!

How I pulled off buying "yet more" fabric is that my father-in-law is Scottish born (now lives here in Vancouver) and has being hinting how he would like a kilt. Well, he is a great guy and deserves one. luckily, the tartan is asymmetrical ..so i "had" to buy 8 yards. Well, that happens to be enough for two kilts! The perfect win-win situation.
On a side note for those from the States - New England is full of beautiful maple trees - no need to be Canadian to feel a connection to this tartan.
