I was 52 before I wore the kilt for the first time and I am a Scot born and bred. It is not that my mother did not try to persuade me sooner, I was just a slow learner I now have eight and wear one nearly every day.
And of course you don't have to be Scottish (or Welsh) to wear the kilt. Just wear it with pride and enjoy yourself.
