Oh! I know exactly what you mean, Lord Rex. The heels and feathered three-corner hat just put you into that Wal*Mart state of mind and let's everyone know: I'm here to shop, girlfriend!
Or something like that...
On the contrary, I believe Lamar Britt of Britt-Ferguson Sporrans wears a great kilt on a nearly daily basis! And they don't call it HOT-lanta for nothin', man! Though it does kinda lose it's functional appeal in subtropical weather and where there is central H/AC aplenty...
Och, weil...
Here's tae us, Whas like us... Deil the Yin!

You know, I was just saying to my wife how you just never see enough prissy fops out and about these days. That would account for the dramatic drop in sales of snuff boxes.

I'll don mine 1-2 times annually, however, it's almost always piping for a Renaissance themed wedding or similar event.
It is a bit of trouble to put on just so, but that improves with practice.
I've also worn the great kilt while piping in Glencoe and a few other places in the Highlands. It is particularly comfortable wrapped around oneself when it's spitting with rain, or a Highland mist is falling.
Slainte yall,

Reminds me of the coat Johnny Depp wore on Pirate of the Caribbean. I liked that coat he had....

You see them worn these days primarily by reenactors.

So why would you expect to see someone wearing eighteenth century Highland Dress?

I only see them at Renn Faires and Highland Games, and in my opinion, they look out of place at those places too (unless done for reenacting, of course).
At the Milwaukee Highland Games last summer, the guy doing the "Great Kilt Demo" had it ALL wrong. His history lesson was wrong, his facts were wrong, and even the way he was wearing it was wrong. I wrote a letter, but I think that just reinforces my belief that belted plaids should be left to the reenactors...

Each year at the Heather & Thistle Society's Rabbie Burns Supper, there are at least 3 that wear the great kilt with all the formal accoutrements and do so very well. But, I am not one of them.

Not the same league, but I love this photo!
