He wouldn't dry up until he was dead, trust me on that one. He has been insecure as long as we know him, to the point of controlling his wife, and calling our house to make sure that she actually visited us.

Just when you think you're own family's a mess,...
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

What's wrong with a pointed reply, "I wear the kilt to remind the family what a schmuck you are...and you never let me down."

Aye, we've all got one or two in our family, don't we? Keep walking the high road, or riding in the full wagon as it may be.

Yeah, definitely sounds like he's trying to compensate for some inadequacies in life. Let's make no bones about it - the kilt is the manliest and most macho garment one can wear. That is obvious. Wearing it is definitely not cross-dressing - it's doesn't hang or move the same way a woman's garment does. Ask a woman!
The only guys who would feel "threatened" by another guy wearing a kilt, IMNSHO, are guys with serious, and probably multiple, issues to begin with.
Same thing goes for guys who snicker or chuckle at me when I'm on the bus commuting to or from work. They're the ones with issues - I say a little prayer for their healing and let it be.
As far as where to draw the line in family matters, dude, I can't tell you. You know the old saying, "You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family". I have people in my family that I wish weren't - in fact most of my family would fit in that category - serious ignorant rednecks!
I feel your pain.

I would say don't make his problem yours. Don't respond or react to his insecurities or inappropriate comments.

She forwards photos with those captions to family members. I just ignore her as best I can, but it does bother me. The funny thing is her Husband & Son are both Pipers & have attended Celtic functions with me sporting the Kilt.
SFCRick I wonder, since her husband and son both wear kilts as pipers, if she feels that she can make her feeling known to you but not to her husband and son?
As for the original comments about the kilt, I tend to answer comments of this type is 'thank you you just confirmed that wearing the kilt is the right thing to do." Then I turn around and walk away.

You know, from what you've said, I actually feel some sympathy for the guy. I know it's not easy to take his comments, but maybe there's a way to get them to fall off your back quicker.
