Thanks for the information! Where did you find yours by the way? My s/o wears a kilt and I'd love to buy one for him.

GREAT. Here is my "take"
1. The BEST way is to order it with the KILT. WHY ??
A. This way It will be a "perfect match (color, material,Texture etc.)
B. Important if you are a "purest? but IMHO not ness.
C . The "Weathered Mackenzie was ordered that way when I bought the Kilt from STK (he calls them "piper's Plaids, but they are NOT) http://stores.channeladvisor.com/Sti...0Piper%20Plaid

2. If you know the "mill" or Maker contact them & see if you can order the material. Then Fringe it yourself. (CHEAPER)
a.Also check with our XMTS makers. they, esp. Rocky, should be able to "guide you in finding what you need.
b. The material may not be a "perfect match, But DARN CLOSE.

3. Order generic.
A. My BW Kilts are DoA & DoA 20oz material is HARD to find. I ordered a Dbl. wide 8' pc. of GOOD 16 oz.& IMHO it matches GREAT.(if a KP (read kilt police nit picker) wants to get cute, so be it.)
B. my other ones were ordered as in "2a & 2b)
C.. BTW, several friends of mine have ordered SWK plaids & even with their Wool Kilts the look GOOD. (& 1/2 the $$$$ ++

I call mine a 'Long plaid' as it is even longer than the one worn by puffer.

I take it with me to the folk festival in Sidmouth, in the South west of England
as I am outside in all weathers for a week, and on the final evening there is a late night procession, and with instruments, backpack or shoulder bag it is much better than a jacket or any other covering.

It is very put on and off-able, and when worn can be adjusted for rain, hail, sun, wind and anything else the weather can throw, plus it makes sitting on concrete walls, steps and the like far more comfortable. An added bonus is that when I put on my side drum the plaid pads my neck and shoulder from the strap and my hip from the metal rim and adjusters of the drum itself.

I supose that the plaid is associated with formal events - particularly the fly plaid, but I find that when 'roughing it' in uncertain weather a long length of woolen cloth is just the thing to make it more endurable.

VERY sharp look, Puffer. And, you've done your homework, too! I would imagine the laird's plaid makes it much easier to be chivalrous when the Lady takes a chill, too. :-)

I have a small hand coloured drawing of a g-g grandfather wearing a bonnet and with a plaid draped over his shoulder. He was a shepherd before coming to Canada in the mid-1800s. Appears that the plaid had a utilitarian role as mentioned by Puffer and was not confined to the well to do.

That's a great look, Puffer. I opted out of wearing my laird's plaid last night for Chase's Homecomng b/c it just wasn't cold enough.

If my memory serves, in the painting 'Lochaber no more' by J W Nichol the man is wearing a plaid wrapped around his jacket.

PUffer, as always I am taken with your sense of style. Whether dressed up or down, you tend to put forth a really great--and unique--look that few others (well, maybe Panache!) can emulate. And your uniqueness does not look screwy, just a little different from the other lads.

I like your day outfits a lot, and I just may have to reconsider that day plaid. In these pix as well as the ones with the day doublet, the plaid is a nice touch on a cool day.
