I have to second what Jock Scot and McClef have said. I would suggest that you invest in a quality pre-WWII sgian dubh while you are in Scotland. Check antique shops and look for something with a pre-1940 hallmark.

Right gentleman, I thank you all for your good advice. I will take the sgian dubh along on the trip (in the baggage hold of course) and use discretion as to when and where I carry it. But the suggestions to browse for additional accoutre is duly noted

Jock, I thank you for your caution, and it is not necessary for you to expand any further with specifics. What you're saying comes mostly under the heading of "general good sense" and I hope I'll be bringing that along too!

I believe that a guide for kilt wearing in the UK for those of us visiting from other countries would be very helpful. Maybe you've given us everything we need to know.

I agree with all that Jock said. I'll happily wear a Sgian Dubh most places as it's an accepted part of the dress, but will leave it at home if going out at night in an urban area where it could be misconstrued as being a weapon. In a crowded pub I'm also always aware that it could be very easy for someone else to filch it from my hose & use it as a weapon - or just filch it!

I was informed by a Police Officer, several years ago, that technically the Sgian Dubh is classified as 'an offensive weapon' in the United Kingdom, but that it could be worn legally when one is dressed formally in Scottish National Dress - of which it forms a part. It is adviseable not to wear the Sgian on the street if one is wearing the kilt casually.

If you feel 'undressed' when not wearing your Sgian, might I suggest you invest in a Sgian Don't for daily wear. This is what I wear most of the time since I cannot see myself having a need for a real blade when away from my home - restaurants provide knives on their tables, and mealtimes are the only occasions when I need a blade!!

    Take care,
    Ham.

Does anyone know where I can buy a wooden handled tooth-brush?

    Thanks, Graham.

Not had much problem at all. I had it on in the bus and at the concert hall last week.
