You obviously have a Douglas connection, my question is what is the connection to the Murray of Athol? If you just like the tartan, thats cool but I'd go for the one I had a stronger connection to.

There is a connection, I have been in contact with some Murray cousins in Australia for some time now.
Thanks for all the votes and comments folks, keep them coming, I do enjoy the varied views.

In that case Rob, then I say go for the Murry of Athol, as it would allow you to branch out with your tartans and connections. Also the weathered colours are simply wonderful.

Dark Douglas is very striking and will indeed go with many things, esp. evening wear.

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

I vote for Dark Douglas...like vmac3205, my first thought was that it is a very striking look and a bit unique. It is great!

I have a Black Isle tank, which I believe is the same tartan as commonly referred to as the Dark Douglas. The tartan pattern is extremely subtle as the only color difference is basically between black and a very slightly lighter shade of black, such that the tartan pattern is really only visible in decent light. I love it as it doubles as a basic black while also being a tartan in the right light. It is NOT the same as the Shadow tartan, however.
Picture in dark light where tartan is practically invisible:

I also have a weathered Macdonald but no pictures. The black is beautiful if you have a taste for it.
