I am heavy into my two motorcycles, and have MY money, not OUR money.
So when I want anything going for the Scottish Kilt part of me, it comes out of the Motorcycle Part of Me.

A decent way to for me to save for kilts is to save all the change that I get in a jar.

I dove right in. But as a starving student, I've had to do some creative money prioritization. Bottom line, if you want it, you can do it, it's just a matter of what you're willing to do to get it.

On that kind of purchase, I normaly have the pile of cash in hand, or at least ninety percent of it, before I spend it. That requires that I save up.
However, I was thinking of selling my property last year, and had planned to pinch a little cash out of it for a kilt and other things. I decided to not sell and stay put, so it was back to saving up for a kilt.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

I'm single, my mortgage is paid off, and, since I'm trying to lose weight, I'm not ordering any custom made kilts. I pay for my SWK and ebay kilts out of "petty cash." It's the kilt accessories that kill me. Sporrans and sgian dubhs are not weight dependant, so that is where I've splurged.

i saved and took donations (from coworkers that didn't think i'd actually buy a kilt) to buy my first kilt - my SWK Irish National.
My wife bought me my second - SWK Black Watch.
i'm saving up now for my third kilt (and possibly last, at least for a LONG while) - Utilikilt Original model.

Oh hush Robert, you know all the female kilt makers are all ready married
I did my first kilt purchases with tax return. luckily I had a good one this year so I was able to dive in and purchase a decent full kit. I had to compromise to get everything I wanted but everything I'm getting is nice. Until next year

I tend to limit my purchases to "found money." That is, I don't spend money out of our budget, but any money I receive as gifts, etc. is fair game for kilt purchases. I usually have something in mind that I'm wanting, so I do my comparative shopping beforehand, then once I have cash in hand, I make the purchase. I've managed to purchase three kilts and a couple of sets of the accessories this way in the last year.

How do I fund? I rob banks. Dillinger style. While kilted
Seriously, I am able to fund by having a couple affordable Stillwaters, and try to work into my budget when I really want a new one. I haven't been back down to USAK lately because the last couple times I was in there I told Rocky I'm just about ready to order one. Then something comes up, finances go out the window, you know....
Last month my "kilt fund" became my "ankle MRI insurance deductable" fund
