Ya, Riverkilt, that isn't at all what I am talking about, and I wouldn't wear something like that.
I was thinking of something much more subtle...

Ted, Mael is wearing a vest made up of about 3-inch squares of various bits of tartan, more or less like what you were asking about, only straight across, not on the bias. It's a rather bold look, in my opinion - I'm not sure I'd wear it with a tartan kilt beyond what Cloves suggests.
At the top of the thread you asked about what other vests men would wear. Rarely have a seen a gentleman in a patchwork or quilted vest. Usually they are solid. Sometimes they are brocade - often seen in western wear and what you might call festival formal wear (such as at high-school proms, New Year's Eve). In another thread, we were commenting on a yellow-and-cream brocade vest under a green jacket.

Rex.

Thanks, Rex.
Thinking about it, it was much more of a textural than a visual thing that I was thinking about. To me, there really is no difference between a dark gray waistcoat and a bright orange and purple striped one, other than other people's reactions to it.
That's why I like that brown corduroy jacket and waistcoat so much, it has some texture. But, what can you do. * shrug *

Now that I think about it, a tartan waistcoat is too much of the same pattern with the kilt.
Patchwork is the method of construction of the outer surface of the waistcoat; it could all be the same color. I was thinking of the patern that the squares of fabric make, so yes, it could be subtle. I seem to have seen a silk waistcoat, with the quilt-like paterns sewn in by contrastingly colored thread, because I have that image stuck in my mind. That probably was not with a kilt.
It really doesn't even matter anymore. Besides, being laughed at is not always so fun. I'm remembering having to often wear bright orange or bright yellow shirts in Highschool and when I first started college because that is all I had. People told me to not stand next to them because my shirt was too yellow etc...
