I do occassionally wear a flat cap with a tartan kilt, usually when I am in an extremely casual mood. On those days the flat cap & kilt are usually worn along with an open collar long sleeve shirt, a cardigan sweater, kilt hose & my favorite pair of New Zealand lambskin slippers. In otherwords, when I'm relaxing on the front porch, watching my dog play in the grass as I enjoy a wee dram or four. On rare occassions I'll also wear a flat cap & kilt to the grocery store or another simple errand.
For more formal occassions I'll wear a my balmoral or my glengarry while outdoors but immediately remove it indoors. Unlike most, I tend to prefer my glengarry.
I will sometimes wear a baseball cap but only with my utilikilts.
Now, every now and again I decide to have some fun and throw on a hat that is completely innappropriate. In terms of the looks I receive my personal favorites are a bowler and a massive white woman's easter bonnet with pink boa! The easter bonnet only appears after far too many drinks but it is definitely good for a laugh.

I chose "No strong opinion..." about the flat caps, but my preferred answer isn't among the choices.
I HATE wearing a hat or cap of any kind, regardless of what I'm wearing!

I too have voted, I don't prefer the "Flat Cap" I prefer me "Tam" if I wear anything at all.

I almost added a fifth option---"I do not give a flying fig about flat caps and kilts" ---but thought that might be a little over the top for the purposes of this investigation.

I think you're ordinary joe in a casual kilt and a flat cap looks OK, but a piper in a flat cap just looks declasse.

I voted "yes" but I need to add one caveat: I only condone flat caps while the kilt is being worn casually. In that sense I see it as another bit of clothing hanging in my wardrobe. I've got several flat caps that I wear when dressed casually in both kilts and trousers.
However, when being worn in the traditional sense (i.e. daywear and dressier) I say leave the flat cap at home. In fact, unless in some semblance of uniform (pipe band, color guard, etc) I would say go without a cover all together.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Unless of course I change my mind.
