I was thinking that there was a convention with 6 buttons, of leaving the bottom button unbuttoned. If the vest is long, this might make it lie better while seated. Proceeding to rummage through my closet, I find mostly 5 buttons per vest.

The oldest in my possesion, from a circa-1970 suit, has 6 buttons---and the lowest is completely non-functional, being on the tapered edge near the point, and having no corresponding button-hole! If i'd ever noticed this before, I certainly had forgotten.

Um... As far as I know, the bottom button of any waistcoat is supposed to be worn unbuttoned whether it is funtional or not.

I just cropped back a waistcoat for use with a kilt, and it ended up with four buttons; they were a little further apart than most. I'm not going to worry about it.

I'm still thinking that a jabot would work well with waistcoats having a high neck line. However, I don't know if the notched lapel style would cause problems with the hang of the jabot.

Personally, for me, the higher the neck line the better.

Sadly this is the first thing that comes to mind.

I've been making a set of patterns that have interchangeable features, so I can make my own waistcoats... Just swap out the neck line or the hem line and it's a pattern for a different style that goes on the same back.
