I heard back from the band and they can forward me details of the suppliers they use. He did also say that the tartan was under a copyright owned by himself. Though he has no problems with me using it he was surprised that it appeared anywhere else.
I'm not sure how copyrighting works with tartan but I'm surprised I found it on http://www.scotweb.co.uk/tartan/Shef...r_weight=Heavy on sale.
Still, I'll let you know how it's going and take your advice.

Here is the extract from The Scottish Tartan Authority.
Name of Tartan: Sheffield, City of
Alternative name:
ITI number: 3110
Category: District
Designer / Source: Yellowley, Heather
Date: 2002
Copyright: Slog:
Colour Sequence: RBGKNGNGNGNKGB
Thread Count: R6LB10LG10K8N62G6N6G124N6G6N62K8LG10LB10
Notes:
Sheffield Pipe Band gained permission from the Lord Mayor of Sheffield for a City tartan. Designed by Heather Yellowley of Strathmore Woollens the grey reflects the steel industry, blue and green are the City colours, black is for the coal industry and the red is for the heat - presumably in the steel making process.
Note, that it lists the designer but not that it is Copyrighted.
Contacting Strathmore Woolen Mills would be a good idea.

Firstly from South Wales!
Secondly as you are thinking about getting a kilt why not get married in it too instead of just keeping it for the ceilidh at the reception?

Seems scotweb is being perhaps a little naughty by offering it as they don't have the permission. I did some digging and the piping band hold the copyright from the manufacturer. Still the band should be fine with me using the tartan.
Maybe the kilt will be getting the airing for the full ceremony yet, I'm growing fonder of the idea, especially since I've ruined my own surprise by letting on about the kilt to people at our engagement do!!

MacMillan has a good point. If you like the pipe band tartan, go with it. But you can always (I might ask permission) don their family tartan.
After all, you're family now!

Here's another angle:
If you plan to wear the kilt at occasions other than your wedding, you'll want to buy your own.
If you plan to wear it only to the wedding, and never again, maybe you could borrow one from one of the 'pipers in the City band.
My guess is, though, that once you wear it at the wedding and/or reception, you'll want to wear it more and more.
Welcome aboard, by the way, form western North Carolina, the greatest place on Earth.

My future family doesn't have a clan tartan so I think the city of sheffield pattern is the way to go.
I spoke with strathmore woollen mill and they seemed to like the idea too, so that's a good stamp of support!
I've thought about the hiring of the kilt from the band but to be honest I like the idea of having one for myself ;-)
I think Piperdbh may be right, perhaps I'll get addicted!!
Thanks for all your kind comments too!
