I am only an occasional (very) smoker of cigars; as good a quality and as expensive as I can afford to buy at the time, no particular favourite. Whenever I do get the urge to spark up I'm usually drinking a fine malt (usually Islay of some sort), a complex red (Pinot Noir springs to my mind also, Sionnach) or a decent glass of port.
"O, why the deuce should I repine, and be an ill foreboder?
I'm twenty-three, and five feet nine, I'll go and be a sodger!

On occassion I'll smoke a little natural tobacco and no not the wacky weed, but natural mixture of tobacco, barks and added herbs, a special blend. I'll smoke out of a pipestone pipe I carved myself. As for the drink.. Right this moment, unsweet tea..

I had a calabash with a meerschaum bowl. It was the coolest smoking pipe I ever owned. I had several Savanelli's I liked, too.
Balkan Sobrannie is a moist tobacco (no sugar added though) and a lot of tar would collect in the bottom of the calabash after a while and the dern thing would rattle a bit when I drew on it.

Kind of off to the side a bit...this topic got me remembering and feeling a bit nostalgic. I took inventory of the pipes I have left and googled Balkan Sobranie.
Turns out it was discontinued some years back (I haven't smoked for over thirty-five years) and it is now considered the creme de la creme and holy grail of pipe tobaccos...who knew? In a forum I ran across, someone said that occasionally a tin (?) can be found on EBay...presumably the old original mixture in the white tin...selling for upwards of $650.00. Figured it worked out to $32.00 a bowl. [sigh]
Just as well, I really didn't want to start in again. I'd be happy just to smell a freshly opened tin once again

in my bowl: whatever smells good at the tobacco shop. I average smoking once every 6-8 weeks, and don't keep up with brands or blend names.
In my glass: water. Smoking dries my throat out something fierce. Now why is that?

A good Cuban; knew there was some reason to go to Mexico, or a La Gloria Cubana, Nicaragua I think. As for my glass, an Orange Pekoe or Earl Gray, although I do enjoy a Herbal mix of Red Zinger, peppermint, ginseng and cranberry juice, very refreshing and cleansing. ith:

Something DIET fills my glass and my pipe collection has been gathering Dust for years now. Still love the quiet evenings out and don't begrudge those who enjoy a pint and a good bowl of smoke.
