I'm about 30 minutes south of H'burg, and doubt you'll have any problems from the locals as the people of the Shenandoah Valley are renown for their civility and politeness. I can't, however, vouch for all those passing through.
For example, during the war we found that many of those from the then United States were extremely rude, and not to be left alone in the house or barn as they would help themselves to what ever they fancied without so much as a "Please" or "Thank You". Sadly, I must report, this attitude seems to have crept into many segments of our modern society, although it is much less prevalent here in the South.
I'm sure wearing your kilt will pose no problems.

I once lived in Staunton, not far from where MacMillan of Rathdown now lives (in the same town, but probably a different neighborhood). My paternal grandparents were raised across the mountains and a bit north, in and around Sperryville (Woodville, mostly).
I visited Luray Caverns on my way through there about the end of last year/first of this year, and nobody said ANYTHING about my kilt, even with stops at several local grocery stores (in search of good local brews to savor at home).
I don't see you having any trouble. As a friend is wont to say, "Kilt ON!"
MacMillan, I know the period to which you refer. For the rest of you, if one refers to "the war" or more likely "the big war," it was most assuredly NOT the current overseas crisis, nor even the latter of the two World Wars of the twentieth century. Memories are long in this part of the world--"the big war" was fought in part in that same valley, a century and a half ago.

I wouldn't let that fear ruin a great vacation. Kilt on and enjoy!

INMHO the very essense of a vacation is to throw all caution to the wind and enjoy it to the fullest with no worries. To me, a kilt would only enhance the vacation experience. Obviously, you would be a tourist anyway. Have a little fun with it and speak with an unintelligible Scottish accent just to throw 'em off. That would trully be a memorable vacation in my book!
