"All Quiet On the Western front" comes to mind, but I don't know how great it was compared to any of these others. I usually read war books; some of which have been made into movies.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Samandjanet evening -- when you should see a straaangerrrrrrr,,,,
No mention of M*A*S*H*? Great, great flick. And I have to say I always stop and watch Kelly's Heroes every single time I come across it on American Movie Classics.

I have some faves from the earlier posts, but off the top of my head I'd add the following to the growing list of 10:
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon
Black Hawk Down
Birdy
and the great:
Hell in the Pacific --with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune

hmmm
I respect the story of "Black hawk down" but did not enjoy the movie. Though I forgot about Full metal jacket and Glory!
Hamburger Hill has yet to be posted, nor Platoon...

I remember seeing Glory in the theatre!
The audience left in stunned silence
A great movie!

I need to give some thought for a full Top Ten but a few not mentioned yet are:
The Hill (starring Sir Sean).
A Bridge Too Far (Sir Sean again!).
The Dambusters (best war movie theme ever?).
55 Days in Peking (just about every nationality on this forum represented).
Tora! Tora! Tora! (who's Ben Affleck anyway?)
As an ex-sapper, Zulu will always be my number 1 pick.

Having had the experience of sailing up the rivers in the Vietnam delta, I've always been partial to The Sand Pebbles, Steve McQueen on a river gunboat in China. (Had some kilted highlander lads in the bar scene, too.)
I really enjoyed Master and Commander--The Far Side of the World, with Russell Crowe.
Also I have to nominate The Red Badge of Courage.

Since the category was stretched a mite to include post-war service because "Tunes of Glory" was listed (which I obviously love); to me, one of the best post-war pics is "The Best Years of Our Lives." I don't have it on dvd, but when it's on TV and I've got time, I don't pass it up.
