Good advice there, providing the kilt is made to traditional specifications. I am not being snooty here, but as the waistline of "modern" style kilts are lower, the above advice might not hold sway.

I like mine a wee bit higher, but I have short, stumpy arms. Higher means easier access.
My pipe band played in with another band at a recent area Highland games a few weeks ago. There was a gentleman of great substance (and height) playing with the other band, and for some reason, while still being looped through his belt loops, his sporran was clear down just above his knees. It was all I could do to keep from going over and adjusting his sporran chain. I don't care how big y'are -- that's just sloppy.
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

Aye Jock
I assumed the original poster was meaning a sporran with a traditional kilt.

I did.
Well, that's assuming my StillWater Heavyweight maintains it's stance as traditional... ... instead of insisting on sliding down somewhat over the hours...

I've seen many people wearing their sporrans too low, both in pictures on line and in person. I often see people here posting pics of themselves with comments such as "I know I should be wearing my sporran higher...."
I have never seen someone and thought to myself, "he's wearing his sporran too high."
So I think this is a case of, when it doubt, wear it higher.

I find a good rule of thumb is to ensure the top of the sporran is at the level of the public bone as this acts as a cushion prevents any uncomfortable banging around where you don't want it.

i was always told that the top of the sporran should be a hands width from the top of the kilt. whether or not it ends up between your legs will depend on if you're using a chain or a strap as straps tend to keep it higher and better placed.
at least, that's what i've found.

I must concur with the others. My first sporran instruction was for 2 fingers below the belt. Just enough to keep it from clanking against the metal buckle. I have seen the ones hanging so low that I am surprised they do not trip with it hitting their knees!!

i saw one guy in a pipe band the other week wearing it so that the bottom of the sporran (just a normal one) was level with the bottom of his kilt!! the chain strap was worn BELOW the start of the pleats of his kilt. he looked like he was wearing it the same way rappers wear their jeans.
